GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background of the Study
The efficient management of logistics operations is paramount to the success and competitiveness of businesses in today’s globalized marketplace. Logistics, encompassing the planning, implementation, and control of the flow and storage of goods, services, and related information from point of origin to point of consumption, directly impacts a company’s ability to meet customer demands, control costs, and maintain a competitive edge (Christopher, 2016). In an increasingly demanding business environment, characterized by shorter product lifecycles, rising customer expectations, and intensified competition, effective logistics has become a critical differentiator.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has revolutionized logistics management, offering a wide array of tools and solutions to optimize processes, enhance visibility, and improve decision-making (Chopra & Meindl, 2016). ICT applications in logistics range from sophisticated Transportation Management Systems (TMS) and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) to more basic tools like mobile communication devices and inventory tracking software. These technologies enable businesses to streamline operations, reduce errors, improve communication, and ultimately, deliver superior service to customers. For example, real-time tracking systems allow for improved delivery transparency and predictability, while automated inventory management systems minimize stockouts and reduce holding costs.
In the context of Cameroon, and particularly in Bamenda, the business environment presents both unique opportunities and significant challenges for logistics management. Bamenda, a major city in the Northwest Region, serves as a key commercial hub for the region, with a diverse range of businesses engaged in trade, agriculture, manufacturing, and services. However, the city also faces infrastructural constraints, including limited road networks, unreliable electricity supply, and inconsistent internet connectivity, which can significantly impede logistics operations. Moreover, many businesses in Bamenda are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with limited access to capital and technical expertise, further complicating the adoption and implementation of advanced logistics technologies.
Despite these challenges, the adoption of ICT in logistics management is increasingly recognized as a critical pathway for businesses in Bamenda to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance their competitiveness. By leveraging ICT solutions, businesses can overcome some of the infrastructural limitations and optimize their logistics processes, enabling them to better serve their customers and expand their market reach.
Customer satisfaction is a key outcome of effective logistics management (Mentzer et al., 2001). Customers expect timely delivery, accurate order fulfillment, and responsive service. When logistics operations are inefficient, leading to delays, errors, or poor communication, customer satisfaction suffers, potentially resulting in lost sales and damage to the company’s reputation. Conversely, when logistics processes are well-managed and customer-centric, businesses can build strong customer relationships, increase loyalty, and gain a competitive advantage.
Therefore, understanding the role of ICT in optimizing logistics management and its subsequent impact on customer satisfaction is of paramount importance for businesses operating in Bamenda. This study aims to investigate the current state of ICT adoption in logistics management among businesses in Bamenda, assess its impact on logistics efficiency, and evaluate its relationship with customer satisfaction. By providing empirical evidence and practical insights, this research will contribute to a better understanding ofthe challenges and opportunities for ICT adoption in the logistics sector in Bamenda and inform strategies for businesses and policymakers to improve logistics performance and enhance customer satisfaction.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
While the benefits of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in logistics management have been widely demonstrated in developed economies, the extent to which these benefits are realized in developing contexts like Bamenda, Cameroon, remains unclear. Despite the potential of ICT to address inefficiencies and improve logistics operations, businesses in Bamenda continue to face challenges related to delivery delays, high transportation costs, inventory management difficulties, and limited supply chain visibility. These challenges ultimately impact customer satisfaction, leading to lost sales, damaged reputations, and reduced competitiveness.
Specifically, many businesses in Bamenda rely on traditional, manual methods for managing logistics, lacking the technological infrastructure and expertise necessary to effectively implement and utilize ICT solutions. This reliance on manual processes results in inefficiencies, errors, and delays, hindering their ability to meet customer expectations for timely and reliable service. The infrastructural limitations in Bamenda, such as unreliable internet access and electricity supply, further compound these challenges, making it difficult for businesses to fully leverage the potential of ICT.
Although some businesses in Bamenda have started to adopt ICT tools for logistics management, the adoption rate remains relatively low, and the impact on logistics efficiency and customer satisfaction is not well understood. There is a lack of empirical evidence on the specific types of ICT technologies being used, the challenges encountered during implementation, and the actual benefits realized by businesses in Bamenda. Furthermore, there is limited research on the relationship between ICT adoption in logistics and customer satisfaction in the unique context of Bamenda, considering its specific economic, social, and infrastructural conditions.
Without a clear understanding of the current state of ICT adoption in logistics and its impact on customer satisfaction, businesses in Bamenda are unable to make informed decisions about technology investments and strategic improvements to their logistics operations. This lack of information also hinders policymakers’ ability to develop effective policies and support programs to promote ICT adoption and improve logistics performance in the region.
Therefore, this study seeks to address the critical gap in knowledge by investigating the application of ICT in logistics management and its impact on customer satisfaction among businesses in Bamenda, Cameroon. By providing empirical evidence and practical insights, this research will contribute to a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities for ICT adoption in the logistics sector in Bamenda and inform strategies for businesses and policymakers to improve logistics performance and enhance customer satisfaction.
1.3. Research Objectives
The main objective of this study is to investigate the application of ICT in logistics management and its impact on customer satisfaction among businesses in Bamenda, Cameroon

Hypothesis
H1: There is a statistically significant positive relationship between the extent of ICT adoption in logistics management and customer satisfaction among businesses in Bamenda.
H2: Greater ICT adoption in logistics management leads to a significant decrease in average delivery times for businesses in Bamenda.
H3: Greater ICT adoption in logistics management is associated with significantly lower transportation costs for businesses in Bamenda.
