Abstract

This study assesses the knowledge and acceptance of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) among mothers in the management of diarrhea in children aged 0-5 years in Buea Municipality. Diarrhea remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in young children, and ORT is a simple, effective treatment that can significantly reduce these risks. This research explores the extent to which mothers are aware of ORT, their attitudes towards its use, and the factors influencing its acceptance in managing childhood diarrhea. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, involving structured questionnaires administered to mothers in various health facilities within Buea Municipality. The findings indicate that while there is a moderate level of awareness about ORT among mothers, acceptance and consistent use are influenced by factors such as educational level, access to health information, and cultural beliefs. Some mothers prefer traditional remedies or are unaware of the correct preparation and administration of ORT, which can hinder its effectiveness. The study concludes that enhancing mothers’ knowledge through targeted health education programs and improving access to ORT can lead to better management of diarrhea in children, ultimately reducing child mortality rates. The research provides valuable insights for healthcare providers and policymakers in designing interventions that promote the use of ORT in managing childhood diarrhea.
