Abstract

This study explores the knowledge and attitudes of nurses regarding autism in Fako Division, Cameroon. Autism, a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by challenges in social interaction, communication, and behavior, is increasingly recognized in sub-Saharan Africa, yet awareness and understanding among healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, remain limited. Given the critical role nurses play in early detection, intervention, and support for individuals with autism, their knowledge and attitudes significantly impact the quality of care and support provided to patients and their families.

The research employs a cross-sectional survey design, targeting nurses working in various healthcare settings within Fako Division. Data were gathered using structured questionnaires that assessed the nurses’ knowledge of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including its signs, symptoms, causes, and available interventions. The study also examined the nurses’ attitudes towards individuals with autism, focusing on empathy, acceptance, and perceived competence in managing autistic patients.

Preliminary results indicate that while most nurses have a general awareness of autism, there are substantial gaps in detailed knowledge, particularly concerning the early signs and the spectrum nature of the disorder. Attitudes towards individuals with autism vary, with some nurses expressing uncertainty about their ability to effectively manage and support autistic patients, highlighting the need for more comprehensive training in this area.

The findings of this study underscore the importance of enhancing autism-related education and training for nurses. It recommends the inclusion of specialized modules on autism within nursing curricula, as well as continuous professional development programs aimed at improving both knowledge and attitudes. By doing so, the study aims to contribute to the development of a more informed and compassionate nursing workforce, better equipped to meet the needs of individuals with autism in Fako Division, Cameroon.
