Abstract

This study investigates the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) concerning HIV/AIDS among senior secondary school students in Fako Division, South West Region, Cameroon. Despite ongoing public health efforts, HIV/AIDS remains a significant concern in Cameroon, particularly among the youth. Understanding students’ KAP is crucial for designing effective educational interventions that can reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS and promote safer behaviors.

The research employs a cross-sectional survey design, involving a sample of senior secondary school students across various institutions in Fako Division. Data were collected through structured questionnaires that assessed students’ knowledge of HIV/AIDS transmission, prevention, and treatment, as well as their attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) and their practices concerning sexual behavior and health-seeking.

Preliminary findings suggest that while most students have a basic understanding of HIV/AIDS, there are notable gaps in knowledge regarding specific modes of transmission and prevention methods. Attitudes towards PLWHA vary, with some students exhibiting stigmatizing views, which may hinder the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS education programs. Additionally, the study reveals that risky sexual practices are prevalent among students, despite their awareness of HIV/AIDS, indicating a disconnect between knowledge and behavior.

The study highlights the need for comprehensive sexual health education that not only provides accurate information but also addresses attitudes and behavioral change. It recommends targeted interventions that focus on increasing awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting safe sexual practices among secondary school students. By enhancing the KAP regarding HIV/AIDS, this research aims to contribute to the reduction of HIV transmission rates and the promotion of a healthier, more informed youth population in Fako Division.
