GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The Bafut Museum, located in the North West Region of Cameroon, serves as a vital repository of the rich cultural heritage of the Bafut people, who are part of the larger Grassfields ethnic group. The museum was initiated to preserve and showcase the unique historical artifacts, traditional practices, Storytelling and customs of the Bafut kingdom, which dates back several centuries. The museum not only aims to document the local history but also to promote awareness of the cultural identity and the socio-political significance of the Bafut community in the broader context of Cameroon’s history.

Historically, the Bafut people have maintained a distinct cultural identity, rooted in their traditional governance structures, social organization, and artistic expressions. The region is known for its complex kinship systems and the institution of the Fon (traditional king), which plays a crucial role in the preservation of cultural practices. The museum’s collection includes royal regalia, traditional crafts, and ceremonial objects that reflect the community’s values, beliefs, and artistic skills.

In recent years, the importance of the Bafut Museum has grown as global interest in indigenous cultures and heritage preservation has surged. The museum plays a pivotal role in cultural tourism, attracting visitors who are eager to learn about the Bafut people’s unique traditions. Moreso, the museum engages in community outreach and educational programs aimed at fostering a sense of pride among local youth and ensuring the transmission of cultural knowledge to future generations. As a result, the Bafut Museum not only preserves the past but also actively participates in shaping the cultural landscape of the region, making it a focal point for both local and international cultural dialogue.

Statement of the Problem

The Bafut Museum faces significant challenges that hinder its mission to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Bafut people. A primary concern is the lack of adequate funding and resources, which restricts the museum’s ability to maintain and expand its collections. This financial shortfall affects the quality of exhibitions and educational programs, leading to the decline of valuable artifacts and limiting conservation efforts.  There is a notable lack of awareness and engagement[1] among the local community regarding the museum’s importance, resulting in underutilization as a resource for education and cultural pride, which ultimately impacts visitor numbers and community involvement.

Moreover, the museum faces the challenges of balancing traditional practices with the influences of modernization and globalization. As younger generations increasingly gravitate toward contemporary forms of expression, there is a risk of undermining traditional customs and knowledge. The Bafut Museum must navigate these changes while fostering a strong sense of cultural identity and continuity, ensuring that the rich traditions of the Bafut people are honored and effectively transmitted to future generations. Addressing these challenges is crucial for the museum to fulfill its role as a vital cultural institution and to engage the community in meaningful ways.
