Abstract
The marketing of banking and financial services is a critical component of the growth and sustainability of financial institutions in Cameroon. This study focuses on the case of Ecobank Buea, examining the marketing strategies employed by the bank to attract and retain customers in a competitive environment. The study utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative research to provide a comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of Ecobank’s marketing practices.
The qualitative component involved in-depth interviews with Ecobank staff, management, and customers to gain insights into the bank’s marketing strategies, customer relationship management, and challenges faced in delivering financial services. The quantitative aspect comprised surveys distributed to a diverse sample of Ecobank Buea’s customers. The data collected was analyzed to identify key factors influencing customer behavior, preferences, and satisfaction levels.
Results indicate that Ecobank Buea employs a variety of marketing strategies, including traditional advertising, digital marketing, and community engagement initiatives, to increase its customer base. The bank has successfully leveraged digital platforms, such as mobile banking apps and online services, to enhance customer convenience and service delivery. However, challenges such as limited customer awareness of some services, competition from other financial institutions, and infrastructural constraints remain significant hurdles.
The findings further reveal that customer satisfaction at Ecobank Buea is closely linked to the bank’s personalized service, convenience of its digital banking solutions, and the accessibility of its financial products. However, areas such as customer service, queue management, and awareness campaigns require further improvement to strengthen the bank’s competitive edge.
In conclusion, the marketing of banking and financial services at Ecobank Buea demonstrates both successes and areas needing enhancement. By adopting a customer-centric approach, improving service delivery, and expanding digital marketing efforts, Ecobank Buea can further strengthen its position in the financial services market. Future research could explore the long-term impact of digital transformation on customer retention in the banking sector in Cameroon.
