ABSTRACT

This study analyzes the meat value chains for cattle and small ruminants (sheep and goats) in Bamenda, Cameroon. Understanding meat value chains is essential for improving efficiency, quality, and profitability in the livestock sector. This research aims to map out the value chain processes, identify key actors, and evaluate challenges and opportunities within the meat industry in Bamenda.

A mixed-method approach was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Surveys were conducted with farmers, traders, processors, and retailers to gather data on the different stages of the meat value chain, including production, processing, and marketing. Qualitative interviews with industry stakeholders provided deeper insights into operational practices, market dynamics, and the challenges faced. The study also reviewed existing literature on value chain analysis in the livestock sector to provide a theoretical framework.

The findings reveal that the meat value chains for cattle and small ruminants in Bamenda involve multiple stages and a variety of actors, including producers, traders, processors, and retailers. Key challenges identified include inadequate infrastructure, high transportation costs, and limited access to veterinary services. Market access issues and price fluctuations also impact profitability for producers and traders. Despite these challenges, there are opportunities for improving value chains through better infrastructure, enhanced veterinary care, and market linkages.

The study concludes that while the meat value chains in Bamenda have several strengths, addressing the identified challenges is crucial for enhancing efficiency and profitability. Recommendations include investing in infrastructure improvements, strengthening veterinary services, and developing better market linkages for producers. By implementing these measures, stakeholders can improve the overall effectiveness of the meat value chains for cattle and small ruminants, benefiting both the industry and consumers.
