ABSTRACT

This study investigates the impact of medical tourism on local development in Kumbo Central Sub-Division, Cameroon. Medical tourism refers to individuals traveling to other countries for healthcare services, which may include surgeries, treatments, and wellness services. This research aims to explore how the growth of medical tourism in Kumbo influences economic development, infrastructure, and community health outcomes.

The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from surveys and qualitative insights from interviews with healthcare providers, local residents, and medical tourists. The study assesses the economic contributions of medical tourism, including job creation, income generation, and investment in healthcare facilities.

Findings indicate that medical tourism has positively impacted the local economy. The influx of foreign patients has led to increased demand for healthcare services and related businesses. Local hospitals and clinics have upgraded their facilities and services to cater to medical tourists, which also benefits local residents by improving healthcare accessibility and quality.

However, challenges accompany the growth of medical tourism. Infrastructure inadequacies, such as transportation and accommodation, hinder the sector’s full potential. Additionally, the local healthcare system faces pressure from the influx of patients, which may affect service delivery to residents.

The study emphasizes the importance of community involvement in medical tourism development. Engaging local stakeholders in planning and decision-making ensures that the benefits of medical tourism extend to the entire community. This engagement can foster a sense of ownership and enhance the sustainability of medical tourism initiatives.

In conclusion, medical tourism offers significant opportunities for local development in Kumbo Central Sub-Division. By leveraging its healthcare resources and facilities, the region can stimulate economic growth and improve health outcomes. However, addressing infrastructure challenges and promoting community engagement are essential for sustainable development in the medical tourism sector. Policymakers and healthcare stakeholders should prioritize initiatives that enhance the connection between medical tourism and local development, ensuring equitable benefits for the community.
