GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.0 Introduction

Urbanization is a defining phenomenon of the 21st century, characterized by the migration of populations from rural to urban areas. According to the United Nations (2022), approximately 56% of the global population lived in urban areas in 2020, a figure projected to increase to 68% by 2050. This rapid urban growth presents significant challenges, particularly in terms of transportation infrastructure and mobility. As cities expand, the demand for efficient, affordable, and adaptable modes of transportation becomes critical.

In this context, motorbikes have emerged as a vital component of urban mobility, especially in developing countries. The World Bank (2021) reported that motorbike ownership has surged in many Southeast Asian nations, with countries like Vietnam and Indonesia experiencing some of the highest rates of motorbike usage globally. For instance, it is estimated that there are over 45 million registered motorbikes in Vietnam alone (Vietnam General Statistics Office, 2020), which translates to approximately 48 motorbikes for every 100 people. This trend reflects a shift towards more flexible and economical transport options as urban populations grow and traditional public transport systems struggle to keep pace.

Motorbikes offer numerous advantages in urban settings: they are cost-effective, require less parking space, and can navigate congested streets more easily than cars. This flexibility makes them particularly appealing for daily commuting and logistics. A study by the International Transport Forum (2019) highlighted that motorbikes can reduce travel times by up to 30% in congested urban areas compared to cars. Moreover, motorbike taxis and ride-hailing services have proliferated, providing employment opportunities and income for millions of individuals.

However, the rise of motorbike transportation also brings significant challenges. Traffic congestion, road safety concerns, and environmental impacts such as air pollution are critical issues associated with increased motorbike usage. The World Health Organization (2020) estimated that road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death globally, with motorcyclists being disproportionately affected. In many developing cities, inadequate road infrastructure and enforcement of traffic regulations exacerbate these risks. This chapter therefore aims to explore the relationship between motorbike transportation and urbanization.

1.1.      Background to the study

Urbanization is a transformative process that shapes the social, economic, and environmental landscapes of cities worldwide. According to the United Nations, the global urban population is expected to increase from 4.2 billion in 2020 to 6.7 billion by 2050, marking a significant shift in demographic patterns (United Nations, 2022). This rapid urban growth has intensified the need for effective transportation solutions that can accommodate the increasing number of commuters and goods transported within urban areas.

Motorbikes have emerged as a crucial mode of transportation in many urban environments, particularly in developing countries. The affordability, maneuverability, and fuel efficiency of motorbikes make them an attractive option for individuals seeking cost-effective means of travel. As reported by the World Bank (2021), motorbike ownership has surged in several Southeast Asian nations, with Vietnam alone boasting over 45 million registered motorbikes, translating to approximately 48 motorbikes for every 100 people (Vietnam General Statistics Office, 2020). This trend reflects a broader shift towards two-wheeled vehicles as urban populations seek alternatives to traditional public transportation systems that often struggle with capacity and reliability. Motorbikes provide several advantages in urban settings. They can navigate congested streets more effectively than cars, reducing travel times significantly. Furthermore, motorbikes require less parking space, which is a critical consideration as cities grapple with limited real estate. This flexibility has led to the proliferation of motorbike taxis and ride-hailing services, generating employment opportunities and providing essential mobility for those without access to private vehicles (World Bank, 2021).

However, the rise of motorbike transportation is not without challenges. Traffic congestion remains a pervasive issue in many urban centers, exacerbated by the increasing number of motorbikes on the road. According to the World Health Organization (2020), road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death globally, with motorcyclists being disproportionately affected. In low- and middle-income countries, motorcyclists account for approximately 23% of all road traffic deaths (WHO, 2020). The lack of adequate road infrastructure and enforcement of traffic regulations further compounds these safety concerns.

The informal nature of many motorbike services raises additional questions regarding labor rights and working conditions for drivers. Many motorbike taxi operators work without formal contracts or protections, which can lead to exploitation and unsafe working conditions. The International Labour Organization (2021) emphasized the need for regulatory frameworks to protect gig economy workers, including those operating motorbike taxis.

Urbanization in Africa is one of the most significant demographic trends of the 21st century. The United Nations projects that by 2050, Africa’s urban population will reach 1.5 billion, accounting for over half of the continent’s total population (United Nations, 2018). This rapid urban growth presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly in terms of transportation infrastructure and mobility solutions. In many African countries, motorbikes have emerged as a crucial mode of transportation, significantly influencing urban dynamics and socio-economic development.

Motorbike transportation has become increasingly popular across various African nations due to its affordability, flexibility, and ability to navigate congested urban environments. For instance, in countries like Nigeria, Uganda, and Kenya, motorbikes are commonly used for both personal transport and commercial purposes, such as motorcycle taxis (commonly referred to as “boda-bodas” in East Africa). According to the National Bureau of Statistics (Nigeria), there are approximately 11 million registered motorcycles in Nigeria, with a significant proportion being used for commercial purposes (National Bureau of Statistics, 2020). In Uganda, it is estimated that over 300,000 boda-boda riders operate in urban areas, providing essential transport services to millions of residents (Uganda Bureau of Statistics, 2021). The rise of motorbike transportation has several implications for urbanization. First, it offers an efficient solution to the challenges posed by inadequate public transport systems. Many African cities suffer from limited and unreliable public transport options, leading to increased reliance on motorbikes. A study conducted in Nairobi, Kenya, found that motorcycle taxis significantly reduce travel times compared to traditional matatus (shared minivans), with average journey times decreasing by up to 40% during peak hours (Mugisha et al., 2019). This efficiency not only enhances mobility but also supports economic activities by facilitating access to jobs and services.

Moreover, motorbike transportation contributes to job creation and income generation. The informal economy in many African cities heavily relies on motorcycle taxis as a source of livelihood. A report by the International Labour Organization (2020) indicated that motorcycle taxi services provide employment for thousands of individuals, particularly youth who may struggle to find formal employment. In Uganda, it is estimated that boda-boda riders earn an average of $5 to $10 per day, which can be a significant income source in a country where many live below the poverty line (World Bank, 2021).

Urbanization in Cameroon has been accelerating over the past few decades, driven by factors such as population growth, rural-to-urban migration, and economic opportunities in urban areas. According to the National Institute of Statistics (NIS) of Cameroon, the urban population increased from 35% in 1990 to approximately 57% in 2020, with projections indicating that this figure could reach 70% by 2035 (NIS, 2020). This rapid urbanization presents both opportunities and challenges, particularly concerning transportation infrastructure and mobility solutions. In this context, motorbike transportation has emerged as a vital mode of transport, significantly influencing urban dynamics in cities like Bamenda.

Bamenda, the capital of the North-West Region of Cameroon, has witnessed a remarkable increase in the use of motorbikes for both personal transport and commercial purposes. Motorbikes are often favored for their affordability, maneuverability, and ability to navigate the city’s congested streets. A survey conducted by the Bamenda City Council in 2021 indicated that approximately 60% of residents rely on motorbikes for their daily commuting needs (Bamenda City Council, 2021). This reliance is particularly pronounced in a city where public transport options are limited and often unreliable.

The rise of motorbike transportation in Bamenda is closely linked to economic opportunities. The informal motorcycle taxi sector has become a significant source of employment for many residents. According to a study by the International Labour Organization (ILO), motorcycle taxis provide jobs for over 10,000 individuals in Bamenda alone, contributing to the livelihoods of thousands of families (ILO, 2020). Riders typically earn between 2,000 and 5,000 CFA francs ($3 to $8) per day, which can be a substantial income in a region where many households live on less than $2 a day (World Bank, 2021).

However, the proliferation of motorbikes also raises concerns regarding safety and regulation. Cameroon has one of the highest rates of road traffic accidents in Africa, with motorcyclists being particularly vulnerable. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death in Cameroon, accounting for approximately 3,000 fatalities annually (WHO, 2018). In Bamenda, motorcycle accidents have been reported to constitute about 25% of all road traffic injuries (Cameroon Ministry of Transport, 2021). The lack of stringent regulations and enforcement mechanisms exacerbates these safety issues. As urban areas like Bamenda continue to grow, addressing these environmental challenges will be vital for promoting sustainable urbanization.

1.2. Statement of the Problem

The impact of motorbike transport services on local economic growth and job creation within Bamenda town is a critical area of study, particularly in developing regions where traditional transportation options are limited. Motorbike transport services, often characterized by their affordability and flexibility, have been shown to enhance mobility for individuals and goods, thereby facilitating access to markets, employment opportunities, and essential services (Börjesson  Eliasson, 2014). This mode of transport can stimulate local economies by creating jobs not only for motorbike operators but also for ancillary services such as maintenance, fuel supply, and logistics (Sullivan et al., 2017). Moreover, by improving connectivity, motorbike transport services can lead to increased trade and commerce, contributing to overall economic resilience and growth within communities (Zhang et al., 2020). However, the extent of this impact vary based on factors such as regulatory frameworks, infrastructure quality, and the socio-economic context of the community (Meyer et al., 2018).

Furthermore, he increase in motorbike transport in urban areas has emerged as a double-edged sword, offering both mobility benefits and contributing to traffic congestion, a significant urban challenge. While motorbikes are often heralded for their ability to navigate through congested streets and provide affordable transport options, their proliferation can paradoxically exacerbate traffic issues by increasing the overall volume of vehicles on the road (Kumar et al., 2018). This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in densely populated cities where the road infrastructure may not be equipped to handle the surge in two-wheeled vehicles, leading to bottlenecks and reduced traffic flow (Poon et al., 2019). Furthermore, the behavior of motorbike riders, who may engage in lane splitting or occupy road space inefficiently, can further complicate traffic dynamics (Noland  Quddus, 2006). As urban planners grapple with the implications of rising motorbike usage, it is crucial to investigate how this trend interacts with existing traffic patterns and contributes to congestion, ultimately affecting urban mobility and quality of life (Litman, 2019). Understanding these relationships is vital for developing effective transportation policies that balance the benefits of motorbike transport with the need for efficient urban traffic management.

Lastly, the rise in motorbike transport usage in Bamenda has become a pressing concern, particularly regarding its implications for road safety and accident rates. As urban areas increasingly adopt motorbikes as a primary mode of transport due to their affordability and convenience, the resulting surge in two-wheeled vehicles has been linked to a corresponding increase in traffic accidents and fatalities (Baker et al., 2020). Studies indicate that motorbikes are disproportionately involved in road traffic incidents, often attributed to factors such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of rider training, and reckless driving behaviors (World Health Organization, 2018). In Bamenda, where road conditions may not adequately support the rising number of motorbikes, the interaction between increased motorbike usage and heightened road safety concerns warrants critical investigation. Understanding this relationship is essential for developing targeted interventions aimed at improving road safety and reducing accident rates among motorbike users in the city (Odeh et al., 2021).

This research seeks to evaluate the impact of motorbike transportation on urbanization in Bamenda town with focus on the economic growth and job creation, traffic congestion and the relationship between the rise motorbikes and safety concerns.
