Abstract

Nurse caring behaviors are critical in enhancing patient outcomes, particularly in high-stress environments like surgical wards. This study explores both nurses’ and patients’ perceptions of the importance of nurse caring behaviors in surgical wards at Buea Regional Hospital in Cameroon, aiming to understand how these behaviors impact patient care and satisfaction.

A mixed-methods study was conducted involving 60 patients and 10 nurses working in the surgical wards of Buea Regional Hospital. Quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire assessing perceptions of caring behaviors, including empathy, communication, and support. Qualitative data were gathered through in-depth interviews with both patients and nurses to explore their experiences and views on the impact of these behaviors.

The quantitative analysis revealed that both patients and nurses highly valued caring behaviors. Patients consistently rated empathy, effective communication, and emotional support as crucial elements of their care. Approximately 85% of patients reported that they felt more at ease and satisfied with their care when nurses demonstrated caring behaviors, such as actively listening to their concerns and providing emotional reassurance.

Nurses also recognized the importance of these behaviors, with 80% of respondents acknowledging that demonstrating care and empathy positively influenced patient outcomes and satisfaction. Nurses reported that caring behaviors not only improved patient comfort but also facilitated better cooperation and adherence to treatment plans. However, they noted that the ability to consistently demonstrate caring behaviors was sometimes constrained by time pressures, high patient loads, and administrative responsibilities.

Qualitative findings highlighted that patients perceived caring behaviors as essential to their overall experience, contributing significantly to their sense of security and trust in the healthcare system. Patients appreciated personalized care, where nurses took the time to address their individual needs and concerns. On the other hand, nurses emphasized the emotional and professional rewards of providing compassionate care but also expressed concerns about the challenges of balancing caring with the demands of their roles.

The study identified several factors influencing the effectiveness of nurse caring behaviors, including adequate staffing levels, supportive work environments, and ongoing training in communication and empathy. Enhancing these factors can help nurses provide consistent, high-quality care and improve patient satisfaction.

In conclusion, both nurses and patients at Buea Regional Hospital recognize the importance of nurse caring behaviors in surgical wards. These behaviors significantly impact patient satisfaction and outcomes. Addressing barriers to implementing caring behaviors, such as time constraints and administrative pressures, and fostering a supportive work environment are essential for improving the quality of care and enhancing patient experiences.
