ABSTRACT

This study was carried on the topic titled, “Optimization of freight forwarding processes at LOMATRANSIT Logistics.” Freight forwarding plays a crucial role in the global supply chain by facilitating the movement of goods across international borders. It is crucial for Cameroon’s participation in global trade, yet the industry faces significant challenges. This study’s main objective was to optimize the freight forwarding processes of LOMATRANSIT logistics in Cameroon. It had as specific objectives to streamline documentation procedures in Loma transit logistic Cameroon, to enhance the supply chain visibility of LOMATRANSIT Logistics Cameroon, and to optimize transport and warehousing operations in Loma transit logistics Cameroon. The study utilized the descriptive survey research design and used mainly primary data to attain the objectives of the study. Semi-structured questionnaires  were used as tools to collect data. A set of workers of Loma transit Logistics were randomly selected among many other workers, to which 44 question questionnaires were administered. Findings reveal that optimization is necessary for freight forwarding processes of Loma transit Logistics since they still experience delays due to errors or omissions, supply chain disruptions and transport delays. The study recommended that Loma transit Logistics should put in efforts to optimize the freight forwarding processes of Loma transit Logistics so as to reduce delays and improve their performance.

Keywords: Optimization, Freight Forwarding Processes

CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background to the study

Freight forwarding plays a crucial role in the global supply chain by facilitating the movement of goods across international borders. In Europe, the freight forwarding industry has become increasingly important due to the growth of global trade and international logistics. To maintain a competitive edge, freight forwarders are continuously seeking for ways to optimize their processes and improve operational efficiency. Freight forwarding can be traced to the days of (Silk Road) when traders and merchants needed to move goods across long distances. In those times, the transportation of goods was a complex process that involved multiple intermediaries including carriers, insurers and financiers. The rate of freight forwarding is constantly increasing due to continue growth in international trade. A prominent figure in international freight transportation is freight forwarding companies. Freight forwarders organize shipments for individuals or corporations to get goods from the manufacturer or producer to a market, customer or final point of distribution. Freight forwarders need to relate with multiple carriers in order to move the goods from origins to destinations and assist customers during the preparation of the required documentation, especially during customs operations. International transportation is a complex system requiring the coordination of multiple actors exchanging a wide set of documents and information, therefore most of the times shipper companies prefer to focus on their core business and leave logistics and transportation issues in the hands of professional third parties. This is motivated, moreover, by the fact that aviation technological infrastructure is not as well developed as in other modalities and harmonization between different countries is far from being a reality. Thus, a network of forwarding agencies spread throughout the globe is mandatory to ensure the smooth transportation of shipments. The activity of freight forwarders relies heavily on such a structure of specialized agents, and with that they can offer professional assistance in every corner of the world. In (2018), Dr. Wolfgang Lehmacher in one of his articles discussed the potential of digital platforms and blockchains technology in revolutionizing freight forwarding processes.

Freight forwarding in Africa is undergoing a transformation driven by technology, with logistics companies leveraging digital platforms, automation, and real-time tracking to optimize the movement of goods across the continent. The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) is expected to bring economic prosperity to the region, but challenges such as the ($130-170 billion infrastructure) gap continue to hinder logistics efficiency. However, these challenges also present opportunities for innovation, with African logistics companies developing digital platforms to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. In South Africa, specific strategies have been identified to enhance the efficiency of freight forwarding, including the use of technology and streamlined operational processes. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis of the freight forwarding market in Africa, focusing on seven countries, highlights the dominance of international players and the importance of contract logistics in driving market growth. In (2016), Dr. Jacque Gakwaya emphasised in one of his articles the unique challenges faced by freight forwarders in Africa including infrastructure limitations regulatory complexities and security concerns.

The freight forwarding process in Cameroon faces various challenges that impact its efficiency and effectiveness. A study on the freight forwarding industry in West Coast Africa, including Cameroon, aimed to identify bottlenecks within the sector. The expansion of global trade and supply chain integration has emphasized the importance of logistics, particularly in the intermediary sector of freight forwarding. However, the freight forwarding industry in West Coast Africa exhibits low logistics performance levels, which hinders its ability to compete in the global market. Global Freightage Services Ltd is a company registered in Cameroon that provides professional freight forwarding logistics and export management services. This indicates the presence of companies in Cameroon dedicated to addressing the challenges in the freight forwarding process. Additionally, the logistics and transport indicators in Cameroon present unique challenges influenced by regulatory factors and ongoing trends, which require optimization of connectivity. Digitalization plays a crucial role in the optimization of freight forwarding processes. Big data enables better decision-making and optimization for more environmentally friendly operations, thus improving sustainability in logistics. Furthermore, companies like (Global Freightage Services Ltd) in Cameroon emphasize the importance of regularly evaluating their operations to optimize processes. The freight forwarding process in Cameroon faces challenges that impact its efficiency. However, efforts are being made to address these challenges through the identification of bottlenecks, digitalization, and the optimization of processes by companies operating in the country. These initiatives are essential for improving the freight forwarding process in Cameroon and ensuring its competitiveness in the global market.

 1.2. Statement of the problem

Optimization refers to the process of making something as effective, efficient and functional as possible. It involves systematically analyzing, evaluating and improving various aspects of a system, process or operation to minimize its desired outcomes or benefits while minimizing or eliminating inefficiencies, costs and drawbacks. In the context of freight forwarding, optimization involves identifying and implementing strategies, techniques or changes that enhance the overall performance and productivity of the logistics operations.  Freight forwarding processes encompasses the activities and operations involved in the transportation of goods or cargo from one location to another on behalf of shippers or consignees. These processes are typically managed by freight forwarding companies or logistics service providers who acts as intermediaries between the parties involved in international or domestic trade. The freight forwarding industry plays a vital role in facilitating international trade by efficiently managing the transportation of goods across various borders. In Cameroon, a strategic location within the central African region, Lomatransit Logistics located in the central region of Cameroon, which is a prominent freight forwarding company, faces significant challenges that impede the optimization of its processes. These encompasses issues related to operational inefficiencies, regulatory compliance, inadequate infrastructure and limited technological integration. Consequently, there is a pressing need to identify and address the key problem areas within Lomatransit Logistics’ operations so as to enhance the efficiency, effectiveness and competitiveness of its freight forwarding in Cameroons’ logistics ecosystem.
