ABSTRACT

Parental involvement in children’s education has long been identified as a key determinant of students’ academic achievement. This study investigates the perceived impact of parental involvement on students’ academic performance in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. The research aims to explore the various ways parents engage with their children’s academic life and how these activities influence students’ success in school. Parental involvement includes a range of activities, such as helping with homework, attending school meetings, providing financial support, and creating a conducive learning environment at home. The study focuses on understanding how these types of involvement contribute to improved academic outcomes and the challenges parents face in playing active roles in their children’s education.

Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative data from surveys and qualitative insights from interviews with parents, teachers, and students in secondary schools in Buea Municipality. The quantitative data involves structured questionnaires targeting parents and students, while the qualitative data includes interviews with teachers to gain an in-depth understanding of the perceived role of parents in the educational process. A total of 200 respondents were selected, including 100 students and 100 parents, ensuring diverse perspectives on the subject.

Findings reveal that parental involvement is perceived to have a positive impact on students’ academic performance. Students who receive academic support at home, such as assistance with homework and regular monitoring of their progress, generally perform better in school. Teachers also report that parents who attend school meetings and maintain communication with educators help to reinforce positive academic behavior in students. Furthermore, the study finds that parents who emphasize the importance of education and maintain high expectations for their children contribute to higher levels of academic achievement.

However, the study also identifies several challenges that hinder parental involvement in Buea Municipality. Economic constraints are a significant barrier, with many parents unable to provide the necessary financial resources to support their children’s education fully. In addition, some parents have limited time due to work commitments, making it difficult to actively engage in their children’s schooling. The study also highlights that a lack of awareness among some parents regarding their role in the academic development of their children contributes to low levels of involvement.

The research concludes that while parental involvement positively influences academic achievement, there is a need for schools to strengthen communication with parents and for initiatives that educate parents on the importance of their role in their children’s education. Policies that encourage and facilitate greater parental participation, particularly for families facing economic and social challenges, could further enhance academic outcomes for students in Buea Municipality.
