INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Photography has played a significant role in mass communication media, such as books, newspapers, magazines, film, television, and the internet. Photographs have the power to capture public interest in current events and human stories, making valuable contributions to the advancement of society. The saying “A picture can speak more than a thousand words” reflects the understanding that photographs have a universal language that evokes emotions across language and educational barriers.

Photographs are crucial in capturing readers’ attention in news articles. Studies have shown that readers are drawn to striking features like headlines and photographs when perusing newspapers and magazines. Combining text and photographs increases the likelihood of readers engaging with the content. Larger and color images tend to attract more attention than smaller and black-and-white ones.

Photographs are generally considered credible sources of information by the general public. People tend to believe what they see visually rather than what they hear or read. Photographs are often taken at face value, while text may be perceived as less credible because readers recognize that words are authored but images are true representations.

However, some argue that photographs alone cannot provide in-depth explanations, historical context, or analysis of the events they depict. A photograph captures a frozen moment and requires accompanying textual analysis to fully understand the event’s before and after.

Different types of photographic presentations exist in newspapers. Stand-alone pictures refer to individual photographs with captions that tell a story independently of other news stories. Accompanying pictures are directly related to the contiguous text of a news report, supporting the story. Picture-based news stories feature sets of photographs without accompanying text, presenting different aspects of a subject or event.

Newspapers heavily rely on still pictures, and in the digital era, visuals have become even more important for attracting and retaining readership. While some argue that pictures enhance readership, others consider them irrelevant or mere fillers in newspapers. Therefore, it is important to understand readers’ perceptions of photographs in Cameroonian newspapers.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The presence of photographs in newspapers can significantly impact readers’ attitudes and understanding of issues. Some readers may view photographs as a support for the text, while others may see them as mere fillers or attention-grabbing elements. Understanding readers’ perceptions of photographs in newspapers is crucial for assessing their effectiveness in conveying information and engaging readers.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The objectives of this study are:

  1. To determine if the use of photographs in Cameroon newspapers contributes to attracting the attention of newspaper readers in Buea.
  2. To assess whether newspaper readers view photographs as space fillers or aids to their understanding of the content.
  3. To examine whether newspaper readers perceive photographs as enhancing the credibility of stories or serving aesthetic purposes.
