Abstract

This study examines post-harvest losses of tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum) and the handling practices in Wotutu, South West Region, Cameroon. Tomatoes are a vital agricultural product in this region, contributing significantly to local economies and food security. However, post-harvest losses represent a critical challenge, reducing the quantity and quality of tomatoes available for consumption and sale. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative data from farm surveys and qualitative insights from interviews with farmers, traders, and agricultural extension officers. The findings indicate that poor handling practices, inadequate storage facilities, and transportation issues are major contributors to post-harvest losses. The study also identifies potential interventions, such as improved handling techniques, better storage solutions, and enhanced transportation infrastructure, to mitigate these losses. Implementing these measures can reduce post-harvest losses, improve the livelihoods of tomato farmers, and enhance food security in the region.
