Abstract
Substance use among students in tertiary institutions is a growing concern, with significant implications for their health, academic performance, and overall well-being. This study examines the prevalence and factors associated with substance use among students in tertiary institutions in Buea, Cameroon. Understanding the extent of substance use and the underlying factors contributing to this behavior is essential for developing effective prevention and intervention strategies.
A cross-sectional study design was employed, involving a survey of students from various tertiary institutions in Buea. Data were collected using structured questionnaires that assessed the prevalence of substance use, including alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other illicit drugs. The survey also explored factors associated with substance use, such as socio-demographic characteristics, peer influence, academic stress, accessibility to substances, and knowledge of the risks involved.
The findings reveal a concerning prevalence of substance use among students, with alcohol and tobacco being the most commonly used substances, followed by cannabis. The study identifies several factors associated with substance use, including peer pressure, academic stress, and the easy availability of substances within and around campus environments. Male students and those living away from their families were found to be more likely to engage in substance use. Additionally, a lack of awareness about the health risks associated with substance use was observed among a significant portion of the student population.
The study underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions to reduce substance use among students in tertiary institutions in Buea. It recommends the implementation of comprehensive substance use prevention programs that include education on the risks of substance use, counseling services, and peer support groups. Furthermore, the study advocates for stricter enforcement of regulations regarding the sale and distribution of substances near educational institutions. Addressing the factors associated with substance use is crucial for promoting healthier lifestyles and improving the academic and social outcomes of students in Buea, Cameroon.
