Abstract

This study examines the prevalence and patterns of psychoactive substance use among senior secondary school students in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. The use of substances such as alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other drugs among adolescents is a growing public health concern, with significant implications for their physical and mental health, academic performance, and overall well-being. Understanding the extent of substance use and the factors influencing it is crucial for developing targeted interventions to address this issue.

The research employs a cross-sectional survey design, involving a representative sample of senior secondary school students from various schools within Buea Municipality. Data were collected through anonymous, self-administered questionnaires that assessed the students’ use of psychoactive substances, including the types of substances used, frequency of use, and patterns of consumption. The study also explored the socio-demographic factors associated with substance use, such as age, gender, family background, and peer influence.

Preliminary findings indicate that psychoactive substance use is prevalent among senior secondary school students in Buea, with alcohol and tobacco being the most commonly used substances. The study reveals distinct patterns of use, with some students engaging in regular consumption, while others experiment occasionally. Factors such as peer pressure, availability of substances, and lack of parental supervision are identified as significant contributors to substance use among the students.

The research highlights the need for comprehensive school-based substance use prevention programs that address both the supply and demand aspects of psychoactive substances. It recommends the implementation of educational initiatives that focus on raising awareness about the risks associated with substance use, promoting healthy lifestyle choices, and providing support for students at risk of or currently using substances. By addressing the prevalence and patterns of psychoactive substance use, this study aims to contribute to the development of effective strategies to mitigate substance use among adolescents in Buea Municipality.
