Abstract
This study explores the use of modern contraceptives among female adolescents in Buea, focusing on prevalence, adherence, the impact of peer counseling, and the lived experiences of these young women. Understanding these factors is crucial for addressing the reproductive health needs of adolescents in this region, where cultural, social, and educational influences significantly affect contraceptive use.
A mixed-methods approach was utilized, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews. The study involved 250 female adolescents aged 13-19, who were surveyed to determine the prevalence of modern contraceptive use and adherence rates. Additionally, a subset of participants engaged in peer counseling sessions to assess how peer support influences their commitment to contraceptive use. In-depth interviews were conducted with 40 participants to gain insight into their personal experiences, challenges, and perceptions related to contraceptive use.
The findings revealed that the prevalence of modern contraceptive use among the participants was 40%, with notable differences based on factors such as age, education, and access to reproductive health services. The impact of peer counseling was significant, as 65% of adolescents who participated in peer counseling sessions reported consistent contraceptive use, compared to 45% among those who did not receive peer support. Peer counseling provided a critical support network, offering accurate information, emotional support, and encouragement, which enhanced adherence to contraceptive methods.
Despite these positive outcomes, the study also identified several barriers to consistent contraceptive use, including stigma, misinformation, fear of side effects, and limited access to health services. Many adolescents expressed concerns about societal judgment and cultural disapproval, which often led to sporadic use or discontinuation of contraceptives.
In conclusion, while modern contraceptive use among female adolescents in Buea shows potential, challenges remain. Peer counseling emerges as a valuable strategy for improving adherence and providing support. The study highlights the need for targeted interventions that address the specific barriers faced by this population, emphasizing the importance of accessible reproductive health services, education, and community support to enhance the reproductive health outcomes of female adolescents in Buea.
