Abstract
This study investigates project risk factors and their management strategies in the context of the Mile 16 borehole construction project in Buea, Cameroon. The provision of clean and reliable water sources is critical for community health and development. However, construction projects like boreholes often face various risks that can impede their success. Understanding these risks and implementing effective management strategies is essential for ensuring project completion and sustainability.
The research employs a case study approach, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was collected through interviews with project stakeholders, including project managers, engineers, and community representatives. Additionally, a survey was conducted to identify specific risk factors and assess the effectiveness of existing management strategies.
Findings reveal several key risk factors affecting the Mile 16 borehole project. These include technical risks, such as equipment failures and geological challenges, as well as financial risks related to budget constraints and funding shortages. Social risks, including community opposition and stakeholder disengagement, also emerged as significant challenges. The study highlights that inadequate risk assessment and mitigation planning at the project’s outset exacerbated these issues.
The research further identifies various risk management strategies employed throughout the project. These include proactive stakeholder engagement, regular project monitoring, and the establishment of contingency plans to address unforeseen challenges. However, the effectiveness of these strategies varied, with some being more successful than others in mitigating specific risks.
In conclusion, the study emphasizes the need for a comprehensive risk management framework tailored to the unique challenges of borehole construction projects in Cameroon. Recommendations include enhancing risk assessment processes, fostering greater community involvement, and improving communication among stakeholders. By adopting these strategies, future borehole projects can better navigate risks, ensuring successful implementation and long-term benefits for the communities they serve.
