Abstract

This study examines the quality of antenatal care (ANC) and its impact on pregnancy outcomes in Fako Division, Cameroon. Antenatal care is a critical component of maternal healthcare that ensures the well-being of both mother and child by providing essential medical services, health education, and support throughout pregnancy. High-quality ANC is associated with improved pregnancy outcomes, including reduced maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity. However, variations in the quality of ANC services can significantly affect these outcomes.

The research utilizes a cross-sectional design, involving a sample of pregnant women who have accessed ANC services in various health facilities across Fako Division. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and interviews, focusing on the components of ANC received, including the frequency of visits, the range of services provided, the quality of interactions with healthcare providers, and the availability of essential resources. The study also assessed pregnancy outcomes, such as birth weight, gestational age at delivery, and the incidence of complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

Preliminary findings suggest that while most women in Fako Division receive ANC services, the quality of care varies significantly across different health facilities. Key areas of concern include inadequate frequency of visits, limited access to essential diagnostic services, and insufficient counseling on birth preparedness and complications. The study reveals a strong correlation between the quality of ANC and pregnancy outcomes, with better quality care associated with more favorable outcomes, such as higher birth weights and fewer complications.

The research highlights the need for improving the quality of ANC services in Fako Division to ensure better pregnancy outcomes. Recommendations include increasing the availability of trained healthcare providers, enhancing the range of services offered during ANC visits, and ensuring consistent monitoring and evaluation of ANC quality across health facilities. By addressing these issues, the study aims to contribute to the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in the region.
