Abstract
This study examines the relationship between quality of life, feeding practices, and cognitive flexibility among third-age individuals (older adults) in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. The third age, often referred to as the period after retirement, is characterized by significant physical, psychological, and cognitive changes that influence an individual’s overall quality of life. Proper nutrition and mental agility are crucial in maintaining a high quality of life in older adults, as they directly impact physical health, cognitive function, and emotional well-being. This research seeks to assess how feeding habits and cognitive flexibility contribute to the quality of life for older persons in this context.
A cross-sectional research design was employed, with data collected from a sample of third-age individuals through structured interviews and cognitive flexibility tests. The participants were drawn from various communities within Buea Municipality. The study focused on dietary patterns, nutritional intake, and cognitive exercises or activities that stimulate mental agility. Quality of life was measured using standard tools that assess physical health, emotional well-being, and social engagement. Cognitive flexibility was evaluated through tasks that required participants to adapt to new information and solve problems in different ways.
The findings reveal a strong correlation between healthy feeding habits and improved quality of life among third-age persons. Older adults who adhered to balanced diets rich in essential nutrients, including proteins, vitamins, and minerals, reported higher physical vitality and emotional stability. Cognitive flexibility was also shown to play a significant role in enhancing quality of life, with participants who engaged in activities such as puzzles, reading, or social interactions demonstrating better cognitive performance and mental resilience. Furthermore, the study highlights that poor feeding practices and limited cognitive stimulation are linked to a decline in both physical and mental health, leading to a reduced quality of life.
In conclusion, this research underscores the importance of promoting healthy eating habits and cognitive activities among older adults to improve their quality of life. It recommends that local health authorities and caregivers prioritize nutritional education and cognitive training programs for the elderly population in Buea Municipality to foster better health outcomes and overall well-being.
