Abstract

The phenomenon of violence in schools poses significant challenges to the educational system, affecting the safety, learning atmosphere, and academic performance of students. This study examines the relationship between quality school management and the prevention of violence in the educational milieu, focusing on the Government High School Bokwango in Buea, Cameroon. It aims to identify the strategies employed by school management that effectively mitigate violence and foster a secure learning environment.

Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates both qualitative and quantitative data gathered from surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions involving students, teachers, administrators, and parents. Key variables explored include leadership styles, disciplinary practices, conflict resolution methods, communication strategies, and the role of community involvement. The study emphasizes the importance of a holistic management approach that incorporates input from all stakeholders in the school community.

The findings reveal that effective school management practices, characterized by proactive leadership, clear policies, and collaborative relationships among stakeholders, significantly reduce incidents of violence. Schools that prioritize conflict resolution strategies, such as mediation and open dialogue, create a culture of respect and understanding, thus minimizing aggressive behaviors among students. Moreover, the establishment of support systems, including counseling services and mentorship programs, enhances student well-being and resilience, further contributing to a safe school environment.

This research underscores the critical role of quality school management in addressing and preventing violence within educational settings. The case study of Government High School Bokwango demonstrates that when school leaders prioritize comprehensive management practices that engage all stakeholders, they can significantly enhance the safety and academic success of their students. The study concludes with recommendations for policymakers and educators to adopt effective management strategies aimed at fostering a non-violent and conducive learning environment.
