Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between family background and the academic performance of secondary school students in Buea, Cameroon. Family background is a critical factor influencing students’ academic outcomes, encompassing variables such as parental education, income level, family structure, and home environment. The study seeks to explore how these variables affect students’ learning experiences and academic success in secondary schools within Buea.
A quantitative research design was employed, using surveys to collect data from a sample of 200 students and 50 teachers from five secondary schools in Buea. The study analyzed family factors, such as parental occupation, educational level, family size, and household income, to determine their impact on students’ academic performance. The academic performance of the students was measured through their grades, classroom participation, and teacher evaluations.
Findings from the study revealed that students from families with higher educational backgrounds and better financial stability generally performed better academically. Parental involvement in the students’ academic lives was also found to significantly influence performance, with students receiving more support and guidance from their families achieving higher grades. In contrast, students from lower-income households or single-parent families often faced challenges, such as lack of resources, which negatively impacted their academic outcomes.
Additionally, the study highlighted that family size plays a role in academic performance, with students from smaller families showing better academic achievements due to more parental attention and resources allocated to each child. Furthermore, parental educational level was identified as a key factor, as children of educated parents had higher aspirations and received more academic encouragement at home.
The research concludes that family background plays a crucial role in shaping students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Buea. Schools are encouraged to consider these factors when developing strategies to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Recommendations include creating programs that engage parents in their children’s education, providing academic support for students from low-income families, and offering counseling services to help students cope with family-related challenges.
