1.1 Background to the Study

Here’s a brief background on the study of road safety. Road safety is a critical concern worldwide due to the increasing number of road accidents and the resulting loss of life and property. This essay examines the background to the study of road safety measures, their implementation , shortcomings, and impacts in Bamenda city, Cameroon. Bamenda city , located in the northwest region of Cameroon ,is known for its bustling transportation network and high traffic density. As such, it is crucial to explore the efforts made to enhance road safety and the challenges faced in this urban setting.

Road safety is a critical global concern due to the high number  of accidents, injuries, and fatalities that occurs on roadways each year. The study of road safety measures aims to identify effective strategies and interventions to prevent accidents and mitigate their consequences. This background section provides  an overview of the importance of road safety, the challenges faced , and the need for comprenhensive measures to improve safety on the roads.

The study of road safety measure in Bamenda city is driven by the need to address the rising number of road accident and their associated consequences. It involve understanding the factors contributing  to accidents, identifying effective interventions, and implementing appropriate measures.

The history of road safety can be traced back to the early 20th century when motor vehicles became more prevalent. As the number of vehicles increased, so did the number of accidents. The focus during this period was on developing traffic rules and regulations to improve road safety.

In the mid-20th century, researchers began to collect data on road accidents and analyze the factors contributing to them. This data-driven approach helped identify the causes of accidents, including driver behavior, road design, vehicle defects, and environmental factor
