Abstract

School discipline is integral to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment. In many educational settings, the nature and implementation of disciplinary measures significantly influence student behavior. This study examines the relationship between school discipline and violent behaviors among students at Government Bilingual High School in Buea, Cameroon. With rising concerns about violence in schools, understanding this relationship is critical for developing effective strategies that not only deter negative behavior but also promote a positive and secure educational atmosphere.

The study employed a correlational research design, focusing on how different disciplinary practices affect the prevalence of violent behaviors among students. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and interviews with students, teachers, and school administrators. The research explored various dimensions of school discipline, including the types of disciplinary actions taken (such as suspension, detention, and counseling), the frequency and consistency of these actions, and the perceptions of students regarding the fairness and effectiveness of disciplinary measures. Furthermore, the study assessed the incidence and forms of violent behavior within the school, including physical fights, bullying, verbal aggression, and other antisocial behaviors.

The findings of the study reveal a complex relationship between school discipline and violent behaviors. One of the key insights is that inconsistent and excessively punitive disciplinary practices often exacerbate violent behaviors rather than mitigate them. For instance, students who perceive disciplinary actions as unfair or excessively harsh are more likely to engage in retaliatory or rebellious behaviors, including violence. On the other hand, disciplinary approaches that are perceived as fair, consistent, and rehabilitative are associated with a significant reduction in violent incidents. This suggests that students are more likely to respond positively to disciplinary measures that emphasize understanding, fairness, and the opportunity for corrective behavior rather than purely punitive approaches.

The study also highlights the role of student involvement in the formulation and implementation of disciplinary policies. When students are engaged in the process of developing school rules and understand the rationale behind disciplinary measures, they are more likely to adhere to these rules and perceive the discipline as just. This involvement not only reduces the likelihood of violent behavior but also fosters a greater sense of community and responsibility among students.

Another significant finding is the impact of the school environment and the role of teachers and administrators in shaping student behavior. Schools where teachers and administrators model respectful and non-violent behavior tend to have lower levels of student violence. This underscores the importance of a whole-school approach to discipline, where the entire school community, including staff and students, is involved in creating and maintaining a positive and respectful environment.

The study recommends several strategies for Government Bilingual High School in Buea to improve its disciplinary practices and reduce violent behaviors. Firstly, it suggests adopting a more balanced approach to discipline that combines firm but fair enforcement of rules with a strong emphasis on rehabilitation and positive behavior reinforcement. This could include the implementation of conflict resolution programs, peer mediation, and restorative justice practices that focus on repairing harm and rebuilding relationships rather than simply punishing offenders.

Secondly, the study advocates for greater consistency in the application of disciplinary measures. Inconsistent discipline, where similar infractions receive different punishments, can lead to perceptions of unfairness and resentment among students, potentially increasing the risk of violent behavior. Therefore, it is crucial that the school develops clear and consistent guidelines for discipline that are applied uniformly to all students.

Finally, the study emphasizes the importance of involving students in the disciplinary process. By giving students a voice in the development of school rules and discipline policies, the school can foster a greater sense of ownership and accountability among students. This not only helps to reduce violent behaviors but also promotes a more inclusive and supportive school environment.

In conclusion, the study underscores the need for a holistic and inclusive approach to school discipline that prioritizes fairness, consistency, and the promotion of positive behavior. By adopting such an approach, Government Bilingual High School in Buea can create a safer and more conducive learning environment that minimizes violent behaviors and supports the overall well-being and development of its students.
