Abstract

This study examines the relationship between school infrastructure and the provision of inclusive education for physically impaired students at Government Bilingual High School (GBHS) Limbe, Cameroon. Inclusive education promotes equal access to education for all students, regardless of physical abilities, and requires that school environments accommodate the needs of students with disabilities. However, the effectiveness of inclusive education largely depends on the availability and quality of infrastructure designed to support physically impaired learners. This research investigates whether the infrastructure at GBHS Limbe meets the requirements for physically impaired students, and how this impacts their educational experience and performance.

A mixed-methods approach was employed in this study. Data was collected through field observations, interviews with school administrators, teachers, and physically impaired students, and a review of relevant school infrastructure. A total of 50 participants were involved, including 10 physically impaired students, 10 teachers, 5 school administrators, and 25 other students. The research focused on the availability of accessible facilities such as ramps, elevators, adapted classrooms, specialized learning materials, and accessible restrooms, alongside the overall school environment.

The findings of the study reveal that while GBHS Limbe has made some progress in accommodating physically impaired students, there remain significant challenges in terms of infrastructure. Most of the school buildings lack ramps and elevators, making it difficult for students using wheelchairs or crutches to move freely between classrooms and other facilities. Inadequate classroom space, inappropriate seating arrangements, and limited access to specialized teaching materials further limit the participation and inclusion of physically impaired students. Additionally, accessible restrooms are scarce, and poor maintenance of existing infrastructure poses safety risks.

The research also shows that while teachers are generally supportive of inclusive education, they lack adequate training in addressing the specific needs of physically impaired students. This gap in teacher preparedness affects the quality of education provided, as teachers are often unsure of how to effectively accommodate these students in their lesson plans and classroom management strategies. Similarly, school administrators face challenges in allocating resources for infrastructure improvement due to limited funding, which hinders their ability to implement inclusive policies fully.

The study concludes that the lack of adequate infrastructure significantly hampers the implementation of inclusive education at GBHS Limbe. Physically impaired students face numerous barriers to full participation in school life, which affects their academic performance, social integration, and overall educational experience. To enhance inclusivity, the research recommends that the school prioritize the construction of ramps, installation of elevators, and creation of specialized classrooms and learning materials tailored to physically impaired students. Additionally, teacher training programs on inclusive education should be strengthened to equip educators with the skills needed to support diverse learners effectively.

The findings suggest that for inclusive education to succeed, school infrastructures must be adapted to meet the needs of all students, including those with physical impairments. By addressing the current infrastructural deficits, GBHS Limbe can move toward a more equitable and inclusive educational environment that ensures equal opportunities for all learners, regardless of their physical abilities.
