Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that significantly impacts the quality of life of elderly individuals, particularly in low-resource settings like Buea, Cameroon. This study explores the role of social affection determinants—such as family support, social interaction, and community engagement—on the quality of life of elderly persons affected by Alzheimer’s disease in Buea.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from health assessments and quality of life surveys with qualitative data from interviews with caregivers, healthcare providers, and the elderly individuals themselves. The study seeks to understand how social affection, or the lack thereof, influences the physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being of Alzheimer’s patients.
Findings reveal that social affection plays a critical role in maintaining and improving the quality of life for elderly individuals with Alzheimer’s. Regular social interaction, emotional support from family members, and participation in community activities are identified as key factors that help mitigate the cognitive decline and emotional distress associated with the disease. Patients who receive consistent affection and support tend to experience better health outcomes, including slower progression of symptoms, better mood regulation, and enhanced cognitive function.
Conversely, the study also highlights that the absence of social support exacerbates the challenges faced by Alzheimer’s patients. Social isolation, neglect, and inadequate care are linked to faster disease progression, increased behavioral problems, and a marked decline in overall quality of life. Caregivers, often family members, also face significant stress and emotional burden, which can further impact the care provided to the elderly.
The study recommends the implementation of community-based programs that foster social interaction and support for both Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers. These programs could include support groups, community centers for the elderly, and initiatives that educate families on the importance of social affection in managing Alzheimer’s disease.
In conclusion, social affection determinants are pivotal in enhancing the quality of life for elderly individuals with Alzheimer’s in Buea, Cameroon. Addressing the social and emotional needs of these individuals through targeted interventions can lead to better health outcomes and a more dignified aging process.
