ABSTRACT
This study examines the impact of social reinforcement on behavior disorders among mild mentally challenged learners in public schools in Bamenda, Cameroon. Social reinforcement involves using praise, rewards, and positive interactions to encourage desirable behaviors. Understanding how these practices affect learners with mild mental challenges is vital for improving their behavioral outcomes and overall educational experience.
A mixed-method research approach was employed, combining quantitative measures of behavior disorders with qualitative interviews of teachers, parents, and educational specialists. The study aimed to assess how different forms of social reinforcement influence behavior disorders in learners with mild mental challenges and identify effective reinforcement strategies.
The findings indicate that consistent and positive social reinforcement significantly reduces behavior disorders in these learners. Learners who received regular praise, rewards, and positive feedback exhibited fewer behavioral issues, including aggression, withdrawal, and non-compliance. In contrast, those who lacked adequate social reinforcement showed higher levels of disruptive behaviors and emotional difficulties.
Teachers and parents reported that implementing structured reinforcement strategies, such as verbal praise and reward systems, effectively managed behavior disorders and improved learners’ classroom engagement and social interactions. Challenges such as inconsistent application of reinforcement and insufficient training for educators were identified as obstacles to optimal behavior management.
The study concludes that social reinforcement is a crucial factor in addressing behavior disorders among mild mentally challenged learners. Recommendations include developing and training educators in effective reinforcement techniques, creating supportive classroom environments, and involving parents in reinforcement strategies. These measures can enhance behavioral outcomes and support the educational success of learners in Bamenda.
