CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

Pregnancy is a key stage in a woman’s life, marked by dramatic physiological changes. These alterations and increased fetal nutrients demand necessitate a harmonious diet supplemented with adequate nutrients that will maintain maternal, health and fetal growth.  Maternal nutrition is of paramount importance for good pregnancy results as it lead to lower occurrence of a range of complications including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and low birth rate. Yet, owing to the significance of right nutrition a town of pregnant women are challenged to grasp and apply dietary suggestions.  Midwives because of their assumed role as primary care givers to pregnant women, are important for advising and instructing women on how to do this. They offer important counseling and support to help expecting mothers make informed decisions about their food intake. This chapter explores the strategies adopted by midwives to Educate pregnant women on the significance of healthy food consumption and nutritional values during pregnancy.

 1.1.1 Background to the study

The short- and long-term impacts of maternal diet on the health of the mother and the fetus widely depends on the mother. Pregnant women’s dietary behavior is influenced by interpersonal and community factors. Nutrition knowledge is one of those numerous factors that may affect women’s diet and pregnant women are perceived to be more receptive of their nutrition information during pregnancy. Nutrition education during pregnancy has been linked to positive maternal and infant outcomes especially among obese women, In spite of these positive links, the provision of nutrition advice by antenatal care providers is not a common practice of the literature, this lack of engagement with women in discussing their diet has been attributed to health care providers being challenged by factors related to  limited resources, education and time.

Midwives are health care professionals perceived to be in a unique position to provide nutrition advice to pregnant women due to their usual contact with the women Through antenatal appointments. health promotion and education are considered among the most important activities that midwives perform with pregnant women as advocates for health and wellbeing rather than managers of diseases However, studies in Sweden reported that midwives struggle to provide dietary advice, especially in the context of health promotion and on challenging issues such as obesity, despite acknowledging it as part of their role

A Quantitativetive study reported that the majority of the midwives believed that their role in providing nutrition advice is significant and the majority reported providing nutrition advice to pregnant women. However, some midwives provided written comments specifying barriers such as lack of time, resources, and the model of care currently utilised as affecting their provision of such advice.

This study aimed to gain further understanding of midwives’ perceptions of their role, particularly the effect of the model of care on the way they provide nutrition advice, the barriers that hinder their role, and the facilitators that may help them to provide better nutrition advice to pregnant women. These insights will contribute to pregnant women receiving quality nutrition advice and support to help them make informed decisions about their diets.

1.2 Statement of the problem.

Despite the numerous benefits of adequate nutrition during pregnancy,  many women continue to face challenges in maintaining a healthy diet which can be attributed to poor knowledge  of essential nutrients,  lack of access  to affordable nutritious food and misconceptions about dietary practices. notwithstanding the repeatedly established positive effects of proper nutrition in pregnancy many women still experience difficulties in achieving a good dietary plan. Previous research on this study seeks to examine the role of midwives in providing nutrition advice to pregnant women this can be seen in an article by Jamila Arrish, Healther Yeatman and Moira Williamson 24th May 2017 title ‘ Midwives Role in providing Nutrition Advice during pregnancy: Meeting the challenges, explores the various reasons including lack of nutrition knowledge and the relationship between the mothers and the midwives.  However the study is significant in that it highlights the crucial role these midwives play in promoting optimal fetal development and maternal health by educating pregnant women on the importance of proper nutrition and proper feeding with a far reaching impact on pregnancy outcomes and the long term health of the baby. This research therefore seeks to identify the effective education method and address potential gaps in knowledge, information improvement to midwifery training and maternal dietary development.

1.3 Research Questions

The study will seek to answer the following questions

RQ1 What are the common strategies midwives uses to educate pregnant women about healthy food consumption?

RQ2. To what extent do these strategies achieve increased nutritional knowledge and dietary behavior in pregnant women ?

RQ3. What are the difficulties midwives encounter when they try to encourage healthy eating in pregnancy?

1.4 Objectives of the Study

The main  Objective  will be seen below

1.4.1 Main Objective ,

Strategies adopted by midwives to Educate pregnant women about the importance of healthy food consumption and nutritional values.

1.4.2 Specific Objectives.

Ob1 To access the awareness and understanding of essential nutrients (eg Folates, iron, calcium) among pregnant women and how this knowledge influences their dietary choices.

Ob2 . To investigate how pregnant women develop meal plans that incorporate a variety of food group, focusing on the frequency and types of food consumed to meet nutritional guidelines.

Ob3. To examine specific challenges pregnant women face in assessing healthy food,  including financial constraints,  time limitations and cultural preferences that may affect their dietary habits.
