Abstract
Teacher professional collaboration has emerged as a key factor in enhancing the efficacy and overall performance of educators. In the context of government secondary schools in Bamenda Municipality, Cameroon, this study investigates the impact of professional collaboration among teachers on their sense of efficacy and effectiveness in the classroom. The research aims to explore how different forms of collaboration, including peer observation, team teaching, shared planning, and professional learning communities, contribute to teachers’ confidence in their instructional abilities and their capacity to address students’ diverse needs.
Using a mixed-methods approach, the study gathers quantitative data through surveys administered to teachers in government secondary schools, complemented by qualitative insights from interviews and focus group discussions. The study examines the extent to which teachers engage in collaborative practices, the barriers to effective collaboration, and the perceived benefits of such practices on their teaching efficacy.
Findings reveal that professional collaboration significantly enhances teachers’ efficacy. Teachers who regularly engage in collaborative activities report higher levels of confidence in their teaching skills, greater adaptability to instructional challenges, and an increased ability to foster student engagement and achievement. Specifically, peer observation and feedback are highlighted as crucial practices that allow teachers to refine their instructional strategies and adopt innovative approaches to teaching.
The study also identifies several barriers to effective collaboration, including time constraints, lack of administrative support, and inadequate resources. Despite these challenges, teachers who overcome these barriers and participate in collaborative practices demonstrate improved efficacy, as evidenced by their willingness to experiment with new teaching methods and their resilience in overcoming pedagogical challenges.
Moreover, the research underscores the importance of creating a supportive school culture that encourages collaboration among teachers. Schools where administrators actively promote and facilitate professional collaboration tend to have more effective teaching staff and better student outcomes.
In conclusion, the study suggests that fostering a culture of professional collaboration among teachers is essential for enhancing their efficacy in government secondary schools in Bamenda Municipality. By addressing the barriers to collaboration and promoting shared professional learning, educational stakeholders can significantly improve teaching quality and student performance. The findings underscore the need for policy interventions and school management practices that prioritize and support teacher collaboration as a means of achieving educational excellence in Cameroon.
