Abstract

Understanding the factors that motivate individuals to choose the teaching profession is crucial for addressing challenges in teacher recruitment, retention, and overall job satisfaction. This study investigates the motivational factors that influence teachers in selected public schools within Buea Municipality, Cameroon, to enter the teaching profession. The objective is to identify the key drivers behind their career choice and how these motivations impact their commitment and effectiveness in the classroom.

A mixed-methods approach is utilized, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to gather data from teachers in various public schools in Buea Municipality. The study explores intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, including passion for teaching, desire to contribute to society, job security, and financial incentives. It also examines the influence of societal perceptions, family expectations, and personal experiences on the decision to pursue a teaching career.

Findings reveal that a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors motivates teachers in Buea Municipality. Many teachers express a genuine passion for education and a strong desire to positively impact the lives of students. This intrinsic motivation is often accompanied by extrinsic factors such as job security, the perceived stability of the teaching profession, and the benefits provided by government employment. Additionally, societal respect for the teaching profession and the influence of role models play a significant role in shaping teachers’ career choices.

However, the study also identifies challenges related to teacher motivation, including inadequate salaries, limited opportunities for professional development, and the demanding nature of the job. These challenges can lead to decreased job satisfaction and, in some cases, a reconsideration of the teaching profession as a long-term career.

The study recommends that educational authorities in Buea Municipality implement strategies to enhance teacher motivation, such as providing competitive salaries, creating opportunities for career advancement, and improving working conditions. By addressing these factors, the education system can attract and retain motivated teachers who are committed to delivering quality education.

In conclusion, understanding the motivations behind choosing the teaching profession in Buea Municipality is essential for developing policies that support and sustain a motivated and effective teaching workforce. By addressing both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors, stakeholders can improve teacher retention and ultimately enhance the quality of education in public schools.
