Abstract

This study investigates the technology barriers affecting the quality of service offered by cyber cafes in Buea, Cameroon. With the increasing demand for internet access, particularly in regions where home broadband is limited, cyber cafes play a critical role in bridging the digital divide. However, these cafes often face several technological challenges that hinder the quality of service they provide to their customers. The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze these barriers, focusing on their impact on customer satisfaction and business sustainability.

To achieve this, a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods was employed. Surveys were distributed to customers of various cyber cafes in Buea to gather data on their experiences, while interviews with cyber cafe owners and managers provided insight into the operational challenges they face. The study also involved direct observations of the infrastructure and technology used in the cafes, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of the issues at hand.

The findings reveal that the primary technology barriers to quality service in Buea’s cyber cafes include slow internet speeds, outdated hardware, and inadequate power supply. Slow internet speeds were identified as the most significant issue, with many cafes relying on limited bandwidth that cannot accommodate the growing demand for data-intensive activities such as video streaming and online gaming. This results in frustrating user experiences, with customers often waiting long periods for pages to load or being unable to access certain online services altogether.

Outdated hardware was another major barrier identified in the study. Many cyber cafes in Buea operate with old computers that struggle to run modern software and applications. This not only slows down the browsing experience but also limits the range of services that cafes can offer, such as graphic design or video editing. The cost of upgrading equipment is a significant hurdle for cafe owners, many of whom operate on tight budgets with slim profit margins. Consequently, the inability to invest in new technology perpetuates a cycle of poor service quality and declining customer satisfaction.

Inadequate power supply is another critical issue, with frequent power outages disrupting service in many cafes. Although some cafes have backup generators, the high cost of fuel makes it challenging to rely on these for extended periods. Power interruptions not only frustrate customers but also damage equipment and reduce the lifespan of the technology used in the cafes, further exacerbating the financial strain on owners.

Additionally, the study identified a lack of technical expertise as a barrier to quality service. Many cafe operators do not have the necessary skills to troubleshoot or maintain their equipment, leading to prolonged downtimes and reduced service quality. This lack of expertise also limits the ability of cyber cafes to offer more advanced services, such as software installations or tech support, which could differentiate them from competitors.

The research concludes that these technology barriers significantly affect the quality of service offered by cyber cafes in Buea, impacting both customer satisfaction and the overall viability of the business. To improve service quality, the study recommends that cyber cafe owners invest in better technology and seek training to improve their technical skills. Additionally, local authorities and internet service providers should work together to enhance internet infrastructure in the region, providing more affordable and reliable connectivity options for small businesses like cyber cafes. By addressing these challenges, cyber cafes in Buea can improve their service offerings, attract more customers, and contribute to the region’s digital development
