Abstract

Advertising is a critical component of marketing that plays a significant role in driving sales, particularly in competitive sectors such as mobile telephone retail. This study examines the effect of advertising on the sales of mobile telephone shops in Buea, a rapidly growing urban area in the South West Region of Cameroon. The research seeks to understand how different advertising strategies—ranging from digital marketing, radio and television commercials, to in-store promotions—affect consumer purchasing behavior and sales performance in this sector. Given the competitive nature of mobile phone sales, effective advertising can be a decisive factor in influencing consumer decisions.

The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative research techniques. Qualitative data were collected through interviews with shop owners, marketing managers, and advertising agents to explore their advertising strategies and the perceived impact on sales. These interviews provided insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by mobile telephone shops in their advertising efforts, particularly in a dynamic and price-sensitive market like Buea.

Quantitative data were gathered through surveys administered to both shop owners and customers. The survey aimed to measure the effectiveness of various advertising channels, consumer awareness of different mobile telephone brands, and the correlation between advertising exposure and actual purchases. Sales data from selected mobile telephone shops were also analyzed to determine any significant changes in sales volumes following advertising campaigns. Secondary data from industry reports and market analyses were used to contextualize the findings within the broader telecommunications industry in Cameroon.

The findings reveal that advertising significantly influences sales in mobile telephone shops in Buea. Digital marketing, particularly through social media platforms, has emerged as the most effective advertising channel, especially among younger consumers who rely heavily on online information when making purchasing decisions. Radio and television commercials also contribute to brand awareness, but their impact is less direct compared to the more interactive nature of digital advertising. In-store promotions and discounts were found to be highly effective in converting consumer interest into actual sales, particularly during peak shopping periods.

The study also identifies challenges, such as the high cost of digital advertising and the limited reach of traditional media in certain demographic segments. Moreover, while advertising drives consumer traffic to mobile telephone shops, factors such as pricing, product availability, and after-sales services also play crucial roles in determining whether consumers proceed with their purchases.

In conclusion, advertising is a powerful tool for increasing sales in mobile telephone shops in Buea, with digital marketing and in-store promotions showing the most substantial impact. However, for advertising to be truly effective, it must be part of a comprehensive marketing strategy that also addresses pricing and customer service. Future research could investigate the long-term impact of advertising on customer loyalty and brand equity within the mobile telephone retail sector in Cameroon.
