CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Education has always been engrossed with new ideas about the teaching and learning process. The school administration is faced with various education reforms to be conversant with the fast-changing approaches, methods and techniques in teaching and learning. Education according to (Researchwap, 2021) is the socially organized and regulated process of continuous transference of socially significant experience from previous to following generations. Education plays a great role in the development of people because people are the wealth of any nation.  Nations are built and destroyed in the classroom. These show that the future of a nation depends on the youth, and the youths are the product of the educational system (Alexander, Jang, & Kankane, 2017). Therefore, educators are seen as architects of a society. In order to effectively engage with students, it is important for teachers to exhibit a good professional demeanor across several dimensions, including their personal character, preservation of their own identity, pedagogical expertise, communication skills, use of instructional resources, and classroom management strategies. Undoubtedly, kids are likely to have a high level of motivation towards their academic success. There exists a significant correlation between the professional growth of teachers and the academic success of pupils.

Background to the Study

Background to the Study

The design of a classroom has a significant impact on student learning outcomes. Around the world, researchers and educators have examined how elements such as lighting, ventilation, furniture arrangement, and aesthetic appeal influence student performance, engagement, and overall academic success. According to Barrett et al. (2015), the physical environment of a classroom contributes significantly to learning outcomes by affecting factors such as concentration, mood, and motivation. Studies have consistently demonstrated that well-designed classrooms provide an atmosphere that fosters active participation and deep understanding, while poorly designed spaces may hinder learning and contribute to academic underperformance.

Globally, attention to classroom design gained momentum as part of educational reforms aimed at improving learning environments in the 21st century. In developed nations, governments and private institutions have invested significantly in the construction of modern classrooms equipped with advanced technology, ergonomic furniture, and climate control systems. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has emphasized the importance of creating learning spaces that are adaptable to different teaching and learning styles, thereby supporting diverse student needs (OECD, 2017). Additionally, sustainable and inclusive designs have been promoted to accommodate students with disabilities and foster equality in education.

In Africa, educational infrastructure remains a critical challenge, as many schools are characterized by overcrowded classrooms, poor lighting, and insufficient ventilation. UNESCO (2019) reported that nearly 40% of schools in sub-Saharan Africa lack basic amenities such as electricity and adequate seating, significantly affecting the quality of education. The poor state of classrooms often leads to low attendance rates, disengagement, and poor academic performance. Initiatives such as the African Union’s Agenda 2063 have highlighted the need to address these challenges by improving school facilities and creating conducive learning environments.

In Cameroon, the state of classroom infrastructure mirrors many of the regional challenges. Schools in rural areas like Benakuma face additional difficulties, including inadequate funding, limited access to modern teaching resources, and poor classroom design. According to the Ministry of Basic Education (2021), over 60% of schools in rural Cameroon operate in temporary or dilapidated structures, often exposing students to harsh weather conditions and creating an unconducive learning environment. The lack of proper ventilation, natural lighting, and appropriate furniture has been identified as a significant barrier to achieving quality education.

Benakuma, a rural town in the North West Region of Cameroon, faces unique challenges in education due to its remote location and ongoing sociopolitical crises. Schools such as Government High School (GHS) Benakuma are characterized by overcrowded classrooms, limited learning materials, and poor maintenance of facilities. The impact of these conditions on student learning outcomes is profound, as students struggle with concentration, reduced attendance, and poor academic performance. Local reports indicate that students and teachers alike find it challenging to navigate the overcrowded and poorly ventilated classrooms, leading to frequent health issues and a lack of enthusiasm for learning (Ngwese, 2022).

The government of Cameroon has made efforts to improve classroom infrastructure through programs like the Education Reform Sector Strategy (ERSS), which aims to upgrade school facilities and provide modern learning tools. However, progress has been slow, particularly in rural areas like Benakuma. The implementation of strategies to improve classroom design could play a pivotal role in enhancing student learning outcomes. Research on the specific effects of classroom design in rural Cameroon, such as at GHS Benakuma, is limited, highlighting the need for case studies to inform policy and practice.

In conclusion, the design of classrooms is a crucial determinant of student learning outcomes. While global and regional efforts have been made to improve learning environments, challenges persist, particularly in rural and underserved communities. This study aims to explore the effect of classroom design on student learning outcomes at GHS Benakuma, shedding light on the specific challenges and opportunities within this context. The findings will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on educational infrastructure and provide recommendations for improving learning environments in rural Cameroon.

Statement of Problem

Classroom design plays a vital role in determining the quality of education students receive, yet many schools, particularly in rural areas like Benakuma, Cameroon, struggle with inadequate and poorly maintained learning environments. Government High School (GHS) Benakuma, like many other rural schools, faces significant challenges, including overcrowded classrooms, poor lighting, insufficient ventilation, and a lack of ergonomic furniture. These issues negatively impact students’ concentration, health, and overall academic performance, thereby limiting their ability to achieve their full potential. Research suggests that a conducive learning environment, characterized by appropriate classroom design, can significantly enhance student engagement, comprehension, and retention of knowledge (Barrett et al., 2015). However, limited studies have been conducted to assess how classroom design specifically affects student learning outcomes in rural Cameroon, where unique challenges such as underfunding, sociopolitical instability, and geographic isolation exacerbate these problems. According to UNESCO (2019), many schools in sub-Saharan Africa lack basic infrastructure, contributing to poor educational outcomes. Despite efforts by the Cameroonian government through initiatives like the Education Reform Sector Strategy (ERSS), progress in improving rural school facilities has been slow, leaving students in disadvantaged areas at a continued academic disadvantage. Therefore, there is an urgent need to investigate the relationship between classroom design and student learning outcomes at GHS Benakuma to identify practical solutions that can bridge the gap in educational quality between rural and urban areas in Cameroon..
