ABSTRACT

Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) are essential to the economic growth and development of Cameroon, particularly in the Southwest Region. However, many SMEs in this region face challenges that hinder their performance, such as operational inefficiencies, poor decision-making, and limited access to real-time business information. These issues are largely attributed to the inadequate adoption of data management systems. This study investigates the effect of data management systems on the performance of SMEs in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. It explores how these systems can improve operational efficiency, enhance decision-making, and drive growth for SMEs. The research also identifies the challenges SMEs face in adopting data management systems, such as financial constraints, lack of technical expertise, and infrastructural limitations. Using a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through surveys and interviews with SME owners and managers in the region. The findings suggest that SMEs that adopt efficient data management systems experience significant improvements in their overall performance, including better customer management, streamlined operations, and increased profitability. The study concludes by providing recommendations for overcoming barriers to the adoption of data management systems, offering practical solutions to enhance SME growth in the Southwest Region.

CHAPTER ONE

INTORDUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) play a vital role in the economic development of Cameroon, particularly in the Southwest Region. These enterprises contribute to job creation, economic diversification, and poverty reduction. However, SMEs often face challenges in optimizing their operations and decision-making due to inefficient data management practices. In an increasingly digital world, businesses must adopt effective data management systems (DMS) to improve their performance and competitiveness.

SMEs are crucial to Cameroon’s economy, accounting for a significant percentage of employment and national GDP. According to the National Institute of Statistics (NIS), SMEs represent more than 90% of enterprises in Cameroon and contribute to approximately 36% of GDP (NIS, 2021). Despite their importance, many SMEs in the Southwest Region struggle with various operational challenges, including inadequate access to financing, limited technology adoption, and inefficient management processes. One of the core areas that affect their performance is how they manage data, which is essential for informed decision-making, customer management, and financial planning.

Data management systems refer to software applications and tools designed to collect, store, and manage business data efficiently. These systems help SMEs track customer information, manage inventory, process sales data, and analyze financial trends. By using data management systems, businesses can access real-time information, improve productivity, and make informed decisions. Data management is especially important in today’s digital age, where companies must handle large volumes of data, often referred to as “big data.”

In the context of SMEs in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, many businesses still rely on traditional methods of data management, such as manual record-keeping and spreadsheets. While these methods may work for small-scale operations, they often become inefficient and error-prone as businesses grow. This is where data management systems become essential for streamlining operations and improving performance. Studies show that businesses that adopt digital tools and data management systems experience better organizational efficiency and decision-making (Mohammed et al., 2018).

Despite the potential benefits, SMEs in the Southwest Region face several challenges in adopting data management systems. One of the primary barriers is the cost of acquiring and maintaining these systems. Many small business owners may lack the financial resources to invest in modern software tools. In addition, the technological infrastructure in some parts of Cameroon, particularly rural areas, is underdeveloped. This makes it difficult for SMEs to fully integrate digital solutions into their operations (Teke, 2020).

Another challenge is the lack of knowledge and expertise in using data management systems. SMEs may not have access to skilled personnel who can set up, manage, and troubleshoot these systems. Without proper training, employees may find it difficult to utilize data management tools effectively. This often leads to underutilization of systems and, in some cases, complete abandonment of the technology after initial implementation (Fon, 2019).

Furthermore, there is a cultural barrier to technology adoption in some areas. Many business owners prefer familiar, traditional methods and may resist change, viewing data management systems as complex and unnecessary. Addressing these challenges requires not only investment in technology but also training and education to build awareness of the benefits of data management systems for business growth.

The use of data management systems can significantly improve the performance of SMEs by enhancing operational efficiency and decision-making. For instance, a well-implemented data management system can help an enterprise reduce operational costs by automating routine processes such as inventory tracking and sales reporting. This reduces the risk of human error and frees up time for business owners to focus on strategic decisions that can drive growth (Makolle, 2021).

Moreover, data management systems offer SMEs the ability to analyze customer trends and market conditions. By understanding customer behavior through data analytics, SMEs can tailor their products and services to meet market demands, thus increasing customer satisfaction and loyalty. This leads to increased sales and profitability (Ngokwe, 2022). Additionally, data management systems provide SMEs with insights into financial performance, helping business owners identify areas where costs can be reduced or profits can be maximized.

The global shift toward digitalization has made data management a key factor in business success. Studies show that businesses that adopt digital tools, including data management systems, are more likely to succeed in competitive markets. For SMEs in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, adopting data management systems can help them overcome local and international market challenges and improve their overall competitiveness.

The Southwest Region of Cameroon is one of the country’s economic hubs, with diverse industries ranging from agriculture to tourism. The region has a vibrant SME sector that contributes to both local and national economic development. However, it also faces unique challenges, including ongoing political instability due to the Anglophone crisis, which has disrupted businesses and reduced economic activity in some areas. Despite these challenges, SMEs in the Southwest Region continue to play a significant role in job creation and local economic growth (Kum, 2022).

Given the challenges SMEs in the Southwest Region face, data management systems present an opportunity to improve business resilience. By adopting efficient data management systems, SMEs can better navigate economic uncertainty and market changes. Data-driven decision-making enables businesses to respond to challenges such as supply chain disruptions, changing customer needs, and regulatory changes more effectively. Additionally, efficient data management allows SMEs to keep accurate financial records, which is essential for securing funding and accessing new markets (Acha, 2021).

1.2 Problem statement

These barriers include limited financial resources, lack of technical expertise, insufficient infrastructure, and resistance to new technologies. As a result, many businesses are unable to take full advantage of the benefits that data management systems offer, such as improved decision-making, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction. The absence of efficient data management hinders their ability to compete effectively in local and international markets, limiting their growth potential.

This study seeks to investigate the effect of data management systems on the performance of SMEs in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. By identifying the key factors affecting the adoption and impact of these systems, the study aims to provide insights into how SMEs can improve their performance through better data management practices. The research will also explore the challenges SMEs face in adopting these systems and propose solutions to enhance their utilization in the region.
