Abstract

Effective financial management is crucial for the growth and sustainability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This study investigates the impact of financial management practices on the growth of SMEs in Fako Division, South West Region of Cameroon. By examining various aspects of financial management, including budgeting, financial reporting, cash flow management, and investment decisions, the research aims to provide insights into how these practices influence the performance and expansion of SMEs in the region.

The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data analysis with qualitative interviews of SME owners and managers. The quantitative component involves analyzing financial performance data from SMEs to assess the correlation between financial management practices and growth indicators such as revenue, profit margins, and market expansion. The qualitative component includes in-depth interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and strategies associated with financial management in the context of Fako Division.

The study finds that sound financial management practices are positively associated with the growth of SMEs in Fako Division. Effective budgeting helps businesses plan and allocate resources efficiently, ensuring that financial resources are used optimally to support growth initiatives. Accurate financial reporting provides valuable insights into the financial health of the business, enabling owners and managers to make informed decisions and attract potential investors. Additionally, effective cash flow management ensures that SMEs maintain sufficient liquidity to meet operational needs and seize growth opportunities.

Investment decisions also play a critical role in the growth of SMEs. Proper assessment and management of investment opportunities allow businesses to expand their operations, enter new markets, and improve their competitive position. The study highlights that SMEs that adopt proactive financial management practices, including strategic investment planning and risk management, are better positioned to achieve sustainable growth.

However, the research also identifies several challenges faced by SMEs in Fako Division. These include limited access to financial resources, inadequate financial literacy among SME owners, and difficulties in maintaining accurate financial records. To address these challenges, the study recommends enhancing financial literacy through targeted training programs, improving access to financial services, and promoting the adoption of modern financial management tools.

In conclusion, the research underscores the significant role of financial management practices in driving the growth of SMEs in Fako Division. By implementing effective financial management strategies, SMEs can enhance their financial stability, make informed investment decisions, and achieve sustainable growth. The study provides valuable recommendations for SME owners, policymakers, and financial institutions to support the development of robust financial management practices and foster the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in the region.
