Abstract
This study investigates the effect of job design on employee motivation and job performance at Njie Forbi Bakery in Buea, Cameroon. Job design, which includes structuring tasks, responsibilities, and roles, plays a crucial role in influencing employee motivation and performance. This research aims to explore how different aspects of job design—such as task variety, autonomy, feedback, and job complexity—impact employees’ motivation and their subsequent job performance. Data collected through surveys from bakery employees highlight key factors that contribute to improved performance and satisfaction. The study provides insights into how effective job design can enhance productivity in a bakery setting.
Introduction
Job design is fundamental to improving both employee motivation and performance across various industries, including the bakery sector. At Njie Forbi Bakery, how jobs are designed can have a direct impact on the bakery’s overall productivity and employee satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between job design and employee motivation, as well as its influence on job performance at Njie Forbi Bakery. Understanding this relationship is essential for creating an effective work environment that boosts productivity while maintaining high levels of employee engagement.
Research Methodology
This study employed a quantitative research approach, gathering data from employees at Njie Forbi Bakery through structured questionnaires. The survey focused on assessing several key components of job design: task variety, job autonomy, feedback, job complexity, and work environment. The data were analyzed to determine how these factors influenced both employee motivation and job performance.
Findings and Discussion
Task Variety: Employees at Njie Forbi Bakery who performed a variety of tasks reported higher motivation and better performance. Job roles that involved different responsibilities helped prevent boredom and kept employees engaged. Conversely, monotonous tasks led to reduced motivation and suboptimal performance. Task variety, therefore, is essential for maintaining high energy and focus among bakery employees.
Job Autonomy: The level of autonomy granted to bakery employees had a significant effect on their motivation. Employees with greater control over how they managed their tasks were more motivated and showed higher levels of job performance. When employees can make decisions and manage their workflow independently, they feel more valued and trusted, which boosts their morale and productivity. On the other hand, employees with little autonomy felt constrained, which negatively impacted their motivation and performance.
Feedback and Recognition: Regular feedback and recognition were critical to maintaining employee motivation. Employees who received constructive feedback and were recognized for their contributions were more committed to their work and showed better performance. Feedback allowed employees to track their progress and make necessary adjustments, while recognition boosted their confidence and motivation. Lack of feedback or recognition left employees feeling undervalued and disconnected from their work.
Job Complexity: The complexity of the tasks at Njie Forbi Bakery influenced employee motivation in various ways. Challenging tasks that required problem-solving skills and critical thinking enhanced employee motivation and performance. However, overly complex tasks without adequate training or support led to frustration and decreased motivation. Finding the right balance of complexity is crucial to ensuring that employees remain motivated and productive.
Work Environment and Resources: A positive work environment and access to adequate resources also played a significant role in employee motivation and performance. Employees who worked in a supportive environment with the necessary tools to perform their tasks efficiently were more motivated and demonstrated better performance. A lack of resources or an unfavorable work environment resulted in lower motivation and hindered performance.
Conclusion
The study concludes that job design has a profound effect on employee motivation and job performance at Njie Forbi Bakery in Buea, Cameroon. Key elements of job design, including task variety, job autonomy, feedback, job complexity, and a supportive work environment, are critical in enhancing both motivation and performance. By structuring jobs in a way that promotes employee engagement and satisfaction, Njie Forbi Bakery can improve overall productivity and maintain a motivated workforce. The findings underscore the importance of effective job design as a tool for driving organizational success in the bakery industry.
