ABSTRACT
This study examines the effect of marketing promotion on the efficiency of banks, specifically focusing on two leading financial institutions in Cameroon: Ecobank and Banque Atlantique. Marketing promotion, which includes advertising, sales promotions, personal selling, public relations, and digital marketing, plays a critical role in enhancing customer engagement, brand visibility, and overall bank performance. The objective of this research is to assess how the implementation of these promotional strategies impacts the operational efficiency, customer acquisition, and profitability of Ecobank and Banque Atlantique.
The study employs a mixed-method research approach, using both qualitative and quantitative data to analyze the relationship between marketing promotion and bank efficiency. Primary data was collected through structured questionnaires distributed to bank employees, marketing managers, and customers of both banks. Secondary data, including annual reports and financial statements, was also analyzed to determine the influence of marketing promotion on key efficiency indicators such as return on investment (ROI), customer growth, and service delivery.
Results from the study indicate that marketing promotion has a significant impact on the efficiency of both Ecobank and Banque Atlantique. Advertising, particularly through television, radio, and digital platforms, was found to be highly effective in reaching a broad customer base and increasing customer awareness of bank products and services. Sales promotions, such as offering discounted service fees and promotional interest rates, were identified as critical tools for attracting new customers and encouraging the use of specific banking products like savings accounts and loans.
Public relations efforts, including community outreach programs and sponsorship of local events, contributed positively to the banks’ brand image and customer loyalty, thus improving long-term customer retention. Personal selling, particularly through direct interactions with corporate clients and high-net-worth individuals, was seen as instrumental in driving the growth of the banks’ business portfolios. Digital marketing, encompassing social media engagement and online advertising, was also identified as a rapidly growing and effective promotional tool for both banks, particularly in attracting younger, tech-savvy customers.
However, the study also found that the banks face challenges in maximizing the efficiency of their promotional efforts. For instance, the high cost of traditional advertising channels and the increasing competition in the digital marketing space were highlighted as key concerns. Moreover, the need for better integration of customer feedback into promotional strategies was emphasized, as this would allow the banks to tailor their marketing efforts more effectively to the needs and preferences of their target audience.
In conclusion, the research demonstrates that marketing promotion plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of Ecobank and Banque Atlantique by driving customer acquisition, improving service delivery, and boosting profitability. The study recommends that both banks continue to invest in diverse promotional tools, with an emphasis on digital marketing strategies to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving financial sector. Additionally, the banks should adopt more data-driven approaches to measure the effectiveness of their promotional campaigns and adjust their strategies accordingly to ensure sustained efficiency and growth.
