Abstract
Online learning platforms have become increasingly significant in higher education, particularly in the context of Cameroon. This study examines the effect of online learning platforms on students’ performance in higher institutions within Buea Municipality. Students’ performance is measured by their academic achievement, engagement, and overall satisfaction with their learning experience. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from student performance records, online activity logs, and course completion rates with qualitative insights from interviews and focus group discussions with students, faculty, and administrators.
Findings indicate that the use of online learning platforms has a substantial impact on students’ performance. Key benefits identified include increased flexibility in learning, enhanced access to educational resources, and the ability to accommodate diverse learning styles. Students who actively engaged with online learning platforms showed improved academic performance and higher levels of engagement. The availability of recorded lectures, interactive forums, and digital libraries enabled students to learn at their own pace and revisit complex topics, thereby enhancing understanding and retention.
The study also highlights several factors that influence the effectiveness of online learning platforms. These include the quality of the digital content, the level of technical support provided, the design of the online courses, and the digital literacy of both students and faculty. Effective online platforms incorporated interactive elements such as quizzes, discussion boards, and real-time feedback, which contributed to a more engaging and effective learning experience.
Challenges identified in the use of online learning platforms include limited internet access, insufficient digital infrastructure, lack of technical skills among students and faculty, and issues related to academic integrity. Addressing these challenges involves investing in digital infrastructure, providing training and support for both students and faculty, and implementing measures to ensure academic honesty in online assessments.
Recommendations for enhancing the impact of online learning platforms on student performance include increasing investment in digital infrastructure and internet access, developing comprehensive training programs for digital literacy, and continuously improving the quality and interactivity of online content. Additionally, fostering a culture of online learning within institutions and ensuring ongoing technical support are crucial for the sustained success of these platforms.
In conclusion, online learning platforms have a positive effect on students’ performance in higher institutions in Buea Municipality. By addressing the identified challenges and implementing the study’s recommendations, higher education institutions can maximize the benefits of online learning, leading to improved academic outcomes and a more flexible, accessible, and engaging learning environment for students.
