ABSTRACT
The impact of taxes on the financial performance of Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Buea is a crucial yet understudied aspect of the local business landscape. This study aims to examine how various tax factors influence the financial performance metrics of SMEs operating in Buea. Through a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative analysis and qualitative inquiry, data is collected from a sample of SME owners and managers in Buea. The research investigates key tax factors such as tax rates, compliance costs, tax incentives, and tax administration efficiency, and their impact on SMEs’ profitability, liquidity, and overall financial health. Statistical analysis is conducted to discern correlations between tax variables and financial performance indicators, while qualitative insights are gathered through interviews to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these relationships. The findings reveal the complex interplay between taxes and SME financial performance in Buea, with certain tax factors exerting significant influence on SMEs’ bottom line. Moreover, the study identifies challenges faced by SMEs in navigating the tax environment, including high tax burdens, administrative complexities, and compliance costs. Additionally, it highlights the role of tax incentives and efficient tax administration in mitigating tax-related burdens and enhancing SME competitiveness. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the nexus between taxes and SME financial performance in Buea and offers practical implications for policymakers, tax authorities, and SME stakeholders to optimize tax policies and foster sustainable business growth.

Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) play a pivotal role in driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and creating employment opportunities in Buea and beyond. As vibrant components of the local business ecosystem, SMEs contribute significantly to the socioeconomic development of the region. However, SMEs in Buea, like elsewhere, face various challenges that affect their financial performance, and one critical factor influencing their operations is taxation.
The taxation landscape for SMEs in Buea is characterized by a complex interplay of tax policies, regulations, and administrative practices. SMEs are subject to various taxes, including income tax, value-added tax (VAT), corporate tax, and other levies imposed by local authorities. These tax obligations impose financial burdens on SMEs and can impact their profitability, liquidity, and overall financial health (Grimsey & Lewis, 2002).
Understanding the effect of taxes on SME financial performance in Buea requires a comprehensive examination of the tax environment and its implications for business operations. Taxes can influence SMEs’ investment decisions, pricing strategies, and resource allocation, thereby shaping their financial performance outcomes (Beck, Demirgüç-Kunt, & Maksimovic, 2005).
Moreover, the tax system’s complexity and administrative burdens can pose challenges for SMEs, particularly those with limited resources and capacity. Compliance costs, tax filing requirements, and the availability of tax incentives are crucial factors that determine SMEs’ tax compliance behavior and financial outcomes (Carpenter & Matthews, 2012).
Furthermore, the tax policies and regulations governing SMEs in Buea may impact their competitiveness and growth prospects. High tax rates or cumbersome tax procedures can discourage entrepreneurship, inhibit investment, and hinder SME expansion initiatives (Wöcke & Brummer, 2006).
However, despite the importance of taxes in shaping SME financial performance, there is a dearth of empirical research specifically focusing on this topic in the context of Buea. Existing studies often generalize findings from other regions or sectors, overlooking the unique challenges and opportunities faced by SMEs in Buea’s business environment (Gordon & Li, 2009).
Therefore, there is a compelling need for context-specific research to elucidate the relationship between taxes and SME financial performance in Buea. By examining the impact of taxes on SMEs’ profitability, liquidity, and overall financial health, this study aims to provide valuable insights for policymakers, tax authorities, and SME stakeholders.
Moreover, by exploring the challenges and opportunities associated with taxation for SMEs in Buea, the research endeavors to inform the development of targeted policies and interventions to support SME growth and sustainability. By fostering a deeper understanding of the dynamics between taxes and SME financial performance, this study contributes to the broader goal of promoting inclusive and sustainable economic development in Buea.
In summary, the taxation of SMEs in Buea represents a multifaceted issue with significant implications for business operations, economic growth, and social welfare. By conducting empirical research on this topic, this study seeks to fill a critical gap in the literature and provide actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders to enhance the tax environment for SMEs and foster their long-term success.
Statement of the Problem
Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in Buea operate within a complex tax environment characterized by various taxes, including income tax, value-added tax (VAT), and corporate tax, among others. The impact of these taxes on the financial performance of SMEs remains a critical yet understudied aspect of the local business landscape. Understanding how taxes affect SMEs’ profitability, liquidity, and overall financial health is essential for policymakers, tax authorities, and SME stakeholders to develop effective tax policies and support mechanisms (Grimsey & Lewis, 2002).
Despite the importance of taxation for SMEs in Buea, there is limited empirical research specifically focusing on this topic in the local context. Existing studies often generalize findings from other regions or sectors, overlooking the unique challenges and opportunities faced by SMEs in Buea’s business environment (Gordon & Li, 2009).
Therefore, the overarching problem addressed by this study is the lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the effect of taxes on the financial performance of SMEs in Buea. Specifically, the research aims to investigate how various tax factors, including tax rates, compliance costs, tax incentives, and tax administration efficiency, influence SMEs’ profitability, liquidity, and overall financial health (Wöcke & Brummer, 2006).
Moreover, the study seeks to explore the challenges and opportunities associated with taxation for SMEs in Buea, including compliance burdens, administrative complexities, and the availability of tax incentives. By examining these issues, the research aims to provide valuable insights for policymakers, tax authorities, and SME stakeholders to enhance the tax environment for SMEs and promote their long-term success.
In summary, the taxation of SMEs in Buea represents a multifaceted problem with significant implications for business operations, economic growth, and social welfare. By conducting empirical research on this topic, this study seeks to fill a critical gap in the literature and offer actionable recommendations for improving the tax environment for SMEs in Buea.
