CHAPTER ONE
The rise of digital communication has transformed the way students at the University of Bamenda engage in written discourse. In this context, abbreviations and shorthand have become universal, permeating various forms of communication, including emails, text messages, and academic writing. This phenomenon raises important questions about the effects of abbreviations on written communication, particularly among undergraduate students.
However, abbreviations serve to enhance efficiency, allowing for quicker exchanges of information in a speedy academic environment. Their overuse of abbreviation can lead to a dilution of clarity and professionalism, especially in formal academic contexts. As students navigate the demands of university life, the balance between informal shorthand and the need for clear, articulate writing becomes crucial.
Moreover, the cultural context of Bamenda, where multiple languages and dialects coexist, adds another layer of complexity. Students may find themselves blending local idioms with English abbreviations, further influencing how messages are constructed and understood. This interplay can either enrich communication or contribute to misunderstandings, depending on the audience’s familiarity with the terms used.
As we explore the effects of abbreviations on written communication at the University of Bamenda, it is essential to consider both the benefits and drawbacks. Understanding these dynamics will enable students to adapt their writing styles to suit different contexts, ensuring effective communication while embracing the evolving nature of language in the digital age and also to help students shape their use of linguistics elements such as syntax, semantics, phonology, vocabulary.
Historically, abbreviations have played a significant role in language, facilitating efficiency in writing. From ancient manuscripts to modern digital communication, abbreviation (shorthand) has been employed to convey messages quickly. With the advent of technology, particularly smartphones and social media platforms, also with the face -paced which the teacher uses to dictate notes, the use of abbreviations has surged, with terms like “LOL,” “BCS,” and “ETC”.
1.1 General Background of the Study
Abbreviations and shorthand have increasingly become an integral part of written communication, particularly with the advent of digital communication platforms such as social media, texting, and email. Shorthand techniques, which allow for the rapid transcription of speech, have historical roots in the English language but have evolved significantly in contemporary times. The University of Bamenda, located in Cameroon, serves as a pertinent setting for examining how these forms of writing impact written communication. Given the linguistic diversity and socio-cultural context of the region, understanding the effects of abbreviations on clarity, comprehension and overall communication efficacy is crucial.
In contemporary communication, particularly within the realm of academic writing, the use of abbreviations has garnered considerable attention. Abbreviations serve as linguistic shortcuts that can enhance efficiency in communication, especially within a university context where the sharing of ideas is paramount (Biber, 2015). The University of Bamenda in Cameroon, like many other institutions around the globe, is a melting pot of diverse linguistic backgrounds and academic disciplines. This environment presents unique challenges and opportunities for written communication. The growing reliance on abbreviations, fueled by digital communication platforms and globalized academic discourse, poses questions about clarity, accessibility, and the potential loss of nuance in scholarly writing.
In recent years, the prevalence of abbreviations in academic writing has been exacerbated by the increasing consumption of digital media, where brevity has become integral (Thompson, 2019). As students transition from informal platforms such as social media to more formal academic writing, inconsistencies in the use of abbreviations may hinder effective communication and academic achievement. Furthermore, the ambivalence surrounding the appropriateness of abbreviations in scholarly writing accentuates the need for a detailed examination of their impact on written communication at the University of Bamenda.
Furthermore, studies by Evans (2017) discuss the socio-cultural implications of abbreviation use in academia, emphasizing its impact on inclusivity and accessibility. Furthermore, Al-Mahrooqi & Roscoe (2018) examine the effects of abbreviations on second language learners’ comprehension, an aspect particularly relevant in multilingual contexts such as Cameroon.
1.2 Statement of The Problem
Despite the convenience offered by abbreviations in academic writing, their effects on clarity, professionalism, and academic integrity can be contentious. In the University of Bamenda, many students may not fully grasp the implications of using abbreviations, leading to frequent misunderstandings in written assignments, reports, and examinations (Njumbe, 2022). There is also a concern that reliance on abbreviations could detract from the formal nature of academic writing, resulting in lower quality submissions
Moreover, there is a lack of empirical research focusing specifically on the implications of abbreviation use in university-level writing in Cameroon. Existing literature often emphasizes the broader trends in abbreviation and academic writing without delving into localized contexts or exploring the student and faculty perspectives comprehensively (Makinde, 2021). This gap presents an opportunity to investigate the specific impacts of abbreviations on written communication at the University of Bamenda.
This study aims to answer the following research questions:
1.3 Research Questions
- How do students and faculty at the University of Bamenda perceive the use of abbreviations in academic writing?
- What are the common types of abbreviations used by students in their written assignments?
- How do abbreviations affect the clarity and professionalism of students’ academic writings?
By addressing these questions, the study seeks to provide insights into the effective use of abbreviations in written communication and offer recommendations for promoting standardized academic writing practices at the University of Bamenda.
1.4 Research Objectives
- To evaluate students’ and faculty’s perceptions of the use of abbreviations in academic writing at the University of Bamenda.
- To identify the types of abbreviations commonly used by students in their academic work.
- To assess the impact of abbreviations on the clarity and professionalism of academic writing.
