Abstract

This study investigates the effects of Asset Liability Management (ALM) on the financial performance of commercial banks in Cameroon. ALM is a critical process for banks, aiming to manage risks related to assets and liabilities to achieve optimal financial performance. This research explores how effective ALM practices influence the financial stability and profitability of banks in Cameroon.

The study uses a quantitative approach, analyzing financial data from several commercial banks in Cameroon over a specified period. Key performance indicators such as Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Net Interest Margin (NIM), and liquidity ratios are examined to evaluate the impact of ALM practices.

ALM involves balancing assets and liabilities to manage interest rate risk, liquidity risk, and funding risk. Effective ALM practices can improve a bank’s financial performance by ensuring that the bank’s interest rate risks are managed, liquidity needs are met, and funding costs are minimized. This research specifically focuses on how these practices affect key financial metrics.

The study reveals that robust ALM practices significantly enhance financial performance. Banks with well-implemented ALM strategies exhibit higher ROA and ROE, reflecting efficient use of assets and equity to generate profit. Effective management of interest rate risk, through techniques such as duration matching and interest rate swaps, positively impacts NIM, contributing to better profitability.

Liquidity management, a crucial aspect of ALM, is also found to affect financial performance. Banks that maintain adequate liquidity levels can manage their operational needs and meet regulatory requirements more effectively, which enhances their stability and performance. Conversely, poor liquidity management can lead to financial distress and reduced profitability.

The study also highlights the role of ALM in mitigating funding risks. Banks that manage their funding sources and costs effectively can reduce their overall risk profile and improve their financial performance. This includes optimizing the mix of short-term and long-term funding to balance costs and benefits.

Regulatory frameworks and economic conditions in Cameroon further influence the relationship between ALM and financial performance. Regulatory requirements may mandate certain ALM practices, impacting how banks manage their assets and liabilities. Economic conditions, such as inflation rates and economic growth, affect the effectiveness of ALM strategies and subsequently the financial performance of banks.

In conclusion, effective Asset Liability Management is crucial for enhancing the financial performance of commercial banks in Cameroon. Banks that implement robust ALM practices, manage interest rate, liquidity, and funding risks efficiently, tend to perform better financially. The study emphasizes the importance of continuous review and adaptation of ALM strategies to align with regulatory requirements and economic conditions to sustain and improve financial performance.
