Abstract

Bullying is a pervasive issue that significantly impacts students’ educational achievement globally, including within the Buea Municipality of Cameroon. This study examines the effects of bullying on the academic performance of secondary school students in this region. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, data were gathered from a sample of 200 students through surveys, interviews, and academic records. The study aims to shed light on how bullying affects students’ emotional, psychological, and academic outcomes.

The findings indicate a strong correlation between bullying and decreased academic performance. Students subjected to bullying frequently exhibit lower grades, poor attendance, and a higher likelihood of dropping out. The emotional and psychological impacts of bullying, such as anxiety, depression, and diminished self-esteem, play a crucial role in these academic challenges. These negative feelings often lead to a lack of concentration, decreased motivation, and an overall disengagement from the educational process.

Moreover, the study underscores the importance of the school environment in either alleviating or exacerbating the effects of bullying. Schools with proactive anti-bullying policies, supportive staff, and strong peer support networks tend to see less severe impacts on bullied students’ academic performance. In contrast, schools lacking these supportive measures witness more pronounced negative effects. The role of teachers, administrators, and peers is critical in creating a safe and nurturing learning environment that fosters academic success despite the presence of bullying.

In conclusion, this research highlights the urgent need for comprehensive anti-bullying programs within the Buea Municipality. Recommendations include the implementation of school-wide anti-bullying policies, regular training for staff on how to handle bullying incidents, and the establishment of support systems for affected students. Additionally, promoting a positive school climate where respect and inclusion are paramount can significantly mitigate the adverse effects of bullying on students’ educational achievements. By addressing these issues, educational stakeholders in the Buea Municipality can improve both the academic performance and the overall well-being of their students.
