Abstract

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become an essential strategy for businesses aiming to establish a positive brand image and influence consumer behavior. Carroll’s CSR Pyramid, which categorizes CSR into four layers—economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic responsibilities—provides a comprehensive framework for understanding how companies can meet societal expectations. This study investigates the effects of Carroll’s CSR Pyramid on consumer buying behavior, focusing on the Mobile Telephone Network (MTN) Company’s Bamenda branch in Cameroon. The research explores how each dimension of CSR impacts consumer perception, brand loyalty, and purchasing decisions.

Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines quantitative data from a consumer survey with qualitative interviews with MTN customers and employees. The quantitative analysis assesses the relationship between consumers’ awareness of MTN’s CSR activities and their buying behavior, including factors such as brand preference, frequency of purchase, and willingness to recommend the brand. The qualitative interviews offer deeper insights into consumers’ attitudes toward MTN’s CSR initiatives, especially in areas such as community development, environmental sustainability, and ethical business practices.

The findings reveal that Carroll’s CSR Pyramid significantly influences consumer buying behavior in the case of MTN Bamenda. Consumers are increasingly aware of MTN’s efforts in fulfilling its economic responsibilities by providing affordable and accessible telecommunication services. This economic contribution builds a foundation of trust and reliability, which encourages consumers to continue using MTN’s services. Furthermore, MTN’s adherence to legal standards, such as data protection and fair competition, reassures consumers about the company’s commitment to operating within the law, which positively influences their purchasing decisions.

Ethical responsibilities, such as transparency in pricing and responsible marketing practices, also play a crucial role in shaping consumer perceptions. Customers tend to prefer brands that demonstrate honesty and integrity in their business dealings. MTN’s ethical stance on customer privacy and its fair treatment of employees contribute to a strong positive brand image, leading to higher consumer loyalty and repeat purchases. Additionally, MTN’s philanthropic activities, such as supporting education and healthcare initiatives in local communities, resonate with consumers who value socially responsible companies. These philanthropic efforts not only enhance the company’s reputation but also create emotional connections with consumers, motivating them to choose MTN over competitors.

However, the study also identifies certain challenges in fully realizing the potential of CSR to influence consumer behavior. One key issue is the communication gap between MTN and its consumers regarding its CSR activities. While MTN engages in various CSR initiatives, not all consumers are aware of them, which limits the impact on their buying decisions. The research highlights the importance of effective communication strategies to raise awareness of CSR efforts and align them with consumer values.

The study concludes that Carroll’s CSR Pyramid serves as a valuable framework for understanding how different aspects of CSR influence consumer buying behavior. For MTN Bamenda, fulfilling economic and legal responsibilities provides the foundation for building consumer trust, while ethical and philanthropic responsibilities enhance brand loyalty and emotional connections. The research suggests that MTN and similar companies can benefit from integrating CSR more deeply into their marketing strategies to strengthen consumer relationships and drive business growth.

Policy recommendations include increasing transparency in CSR reporting, leveraging social media to promote CSR initiatives, and involving consumers in community-driven projects to create a sense of shared value. By effectively communicating its CSR efforts and aligning them with consumer expectations, MTN can enhance its competitive edge and build long-term customer loyalty in the Bamenda market.
