GENERAL INTRODUCTION

1.1.Background to the Study

The study of distribution channels and their impact on supply chain performance is rooted in a history of evolving business practices and academic thought. Early perspectives on distribution often viewed it as a simple logistical function, focused on the physical movement of goods from producer to consumer (Weld, 1916). However, as businesses grew and competition intensified, the importance of strategic channel management became increasingly apparent. The rise of marketing as a distinct field of study in the mid-20th century emphasized the importance of understanding customer needs and preferences, leading to a greater focus on channel selection and management as key components of a firm’s marketing strategy (McGarry, 1958). This shift marked a transition from a purely operational view of distribution to a more strategic one, recognizing its crucial role in value creation and market reach.

The concept of the supply chain, as an integrated system, emerged later in the 20th century, spurred by advancements in information technology and increasing globalization. Rather than focusing solely on individual firm operations, the supply chain view considered the entire network of organizations involved in the production and delivery of a product or service (Houlihan, 1985). This perspective highlighted the interconnectedness of various stages, from raw material sourcing to final consumption. As a result, distribution channels became recognized as integral components of the broader supply chain, requiring effective coordination and collaboration with other actors to achieve overall efficiency and responsiveness (Lambert & Cooper, 2000). These historical views, while not always reflecting today’s complexities, remain critical in understanding the foundational role that distribution has played in shaping modern supply chain practices.

The significance of distribution channels in shaping global supply chain performance cannot be overstated. From the earliest days of formalized trade, the routes and methods by which goods reach their end consumers have been a critical determinant of business success and economic growth (Breyer, 1915).  The choice of distribution channels, whether direct or indirect, profoundly affects a company’s ability to reach diverse markets, manage costs, respond to customer needs, and achieve a competitive advantage. In essence, distribution is not merely a logistical function but rather a strategic element that ties together the various components of a global supply chain.

Globally, different models of distribution channels have evolved, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Direct channels, wherein a manufacturer sells directly to the end user, are often preferred for high-value, custom-made goods, or in instances where close customer relationships are essential (e.g., McCarthy, 1960). However, such channels can be resource-intensive and challenging to scale for broad market reach. Indirect channels, which involve intermediaries such as wholesalers, distributors, retailers, and agents, facilitate a greater reach and are often more cost-effective for companies serving vast markets or handling large volumes of standardized goods (e.g., Alderson, 1957). The selection of the most appropriate channel structure depends on a variety of factors, including the nature of the product, the size and geographical dispersion of the target market, and the specific capabilities and resources of the company.

The intensification of globalization has dramatically altered the landscape of distribution channels. As businesses expand their operations across borders, they encounter diverse market conditions, regulatory frameworks, cultural norms, and logistical challenges that demand innovative distribution strategies. The growth of multinational corporations has led to an increased complexity in the structure of global supply chains, with manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors scattered across multiple countries and regions (e.g., Dunning, 1988). This complexity requires greater coordination, collaboration, and technological sophistication to ensure the smooth flow of goods and information across the extended supply chain. The emergence of free trade agreements and the reduction of trade barriers has further facilitated the flow of goods across borders, making effective distribution channels even more crucial for businesses to capitalize on global market opportunities (e.g., Krugman, 1991).

Moreover, globalization has spurred the growth of new distribution intermediaries, such as third-party logistics (3PL) providers, freight forwarders, and online marketplaces. These intermediaries offer specialized services and expertise in areas such as warehousing, transportation, customs clearance, and e-commerce, which can be invaluable for companies seeking to streamline their supply chain operations (e.g., Bowersox, Closs, & Cooper, 2002). The rise of e-commerce, in particular, has revolutionized traditional distribution models, enabling direct sales to consumers across geographical boundaries and forcing established players to adapt to the new digital landscape (e.g., Laudon & Traver, 2002). Therefore, global firms are now under enormous pressure to choose the right distribution channel mix that blends the physical and digital environments, with emphasis on speed and convenience.

The effectiveness of distribution channels has a direct and profound impact on supply chain performance across multiple dimensions. Firstly, the channel structure influences the speed and efficiency of goods delivery. The selection of the right transportation modes, warehousing locations, and inventory management techniques directly affects the time it takes for products to reach customers. Delays and inefficiencies in the distribution process can lead to increased costs, reduced customer satisfaction, and lost sales (e.g., Ballou, 1999). Moreover, the choice of distribution channels impacts the overall cost structure of the supply chain. Direct channels can be costly to establish and manage for large-scale distribution, while indirect channels involve margin sharing with various intermediaries. Companies must carefully weigh the trade-offs between channel costs and market reach to optimize profitability (e.g., Doyle, 1994).

Furthermore, distribution channels play a crucial role in managing customer relationships and enhancing service levels. The ability to provide timely delivery, handle returns effectively, and offer excellent customer support is directly tied to the effectiveness of the distribution network. Companies with well-managed distribution channels can develop strong customer loyalty and gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace (e.g., Sheth & Parvatiyar, 1995). Conversely, poorly managed distribution channels can lead to customer dissatisfaction, negative brand perceptions, and ultimately, lost market share. Lastly, the selection of channels can influence the overall agility and flexibility of the supply chain, especially when faced with unexpected disruptions such as natural disasters or sudden changes in demand. Companies with diverse and effective distribution networks are better equipped to adapt to these disruptions and maintain continuity of operations (e.g., Simchi-Levi, Kaminsky, & Simchi-Levi, 2003).

The global landscape of distribution channels continues to evolve rapidly, with new technologies, business models, and consumer expectations constantly shaping the industry. The rise of sustainable and ethical sourcing has placed greater emphasis on the environmental and social impact of distribution practices. Companies are increasingly under pressure to minimize their carbon footprint, reduce packaging waste, and ensure fair labor practices throughout their supply chain. These factors are influencing the choice of distribution channels, with greater focus on local sourcing, reverse logistics, and collaboration with socially responsible partners (e.g., Carter & Rogers, 2008). The increasing sophistication of information technology has also created new possibilities for optimizing distribution processes. Advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and block chain technology are being used to improve forecasting, inventory management, transportation routing, and customer engagement.

The African continent presents a uniquely complex environment for understanding how distribution channels affect supply chain performance. Unlike more developed regions, Africa’s supply chains are characterized by a mix of formal and informal systems, significant infrastructural limitations, diverse market conditions, and rapidly evolving consumer behaviors. These factors combine to create a distinctive landscape where traditional supply chain models often require significant adaptation to be effective (Chopra & Meindl, 2016). Early approaches often focused on the deficiencies, but more recent analysis increasingly recognizes the resourcefulness and adaptability that has become a feature of supply chain operations in the region. Distribution strategies must, therefore, be tailored to the context of each specific environment, requiring a nuanced understanding of the local dynamics.

The prevalence of informal distribution channels is a particularly important aspect of the African context. These channels, including small-scale traders, street vendors, and open-air markets, play a crucial role in reaching consumers, especially in rural and peri-urban areas (Akinwale et al., 2019). While these informal networks offer accessibility and affordability, they often lack the efficiency and transparency associated with formal distribution systems. This duality means businesses must navigate a complex landscape where they must leverage these networks where appropriate while establishing direct connections for growth. Moreover, the informality can result in challenges related to quality control, traceability, and standardization, creating additional hurdles for effective supply chain management. It is a situation that requires businesses operating in Africa to adopt innovative approaches to reach diverse consumer groups.

Significant infrastructural challenges continue to impede the performance of supply chains across Africa. Poor road networks, unreliable rail systems, inadequate storage facilities, and inconsistent power supplies contribute to high transportation costs, long delivery times, and increased risks of product damage and loss (Ambe, 2020). These limitations often result in unpredictable supply chains, impacting on the ability of businesses to effectively serve their customers. Overcoming these infrastructural obstacles requires large-scale investments in transport, energy, and communication infrastructure, which represents a considerable hurdle for many African countries. However, the situation is also evolving due to technological advancements.

The adoption of digital technology is transforming distribution channels in Africa, particularly mobile money systems and e-commerce platforms that enable businesses to reach a wider consumer base, facilitate payments, and streamline logistics operations (Okonkwo, 2020). These technological advances are particularly impactful in overcoming logistical barriers in remote regions where traditional infrastructure is limited. Real-time tracking, supply chain management software, and digital payment systems are enhancing visibility, control, and efficiency. Despite these advancements, access to technology and the internet remains uneven, requiring businesses to adapt their distribution strategies to navigate the varying levels of technological adoption across the continent. This uneven adoption creates an interesting dilemma in the design of effective distribution systems.

The diversity of African markets further complicates the development of effective distribution channels. Different countries, and even region ns within countries, are characterized by unique socio-cultural, economic, and political environments (Adjasi et al., 2021). Consumer preferences, purchasing power, and access to information vary significantly, necessitating tailored distribution strategies to meet local needs. Rapid urbanization and a growing middle class are also driving changes in consumer behaviors, with increased demand for convenience, quality, and accessibility. As a result, businesses are increasingly required to adopt flexible and responsive distribution systems that cater to the diverse needs of these evolving markets. This calls for an approach that relies on agility and responsiveness to the unique local demands.

Recent research highlights the growing importance of supply chain resilience and agility in the African context. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the vulnerabilities of existing distribution networks, underscoring the need for greater adaptability and responsiveness (Tukamuhabwa et al., 2021). Businesses are increasingly exploring innovative strategies such as collaborative partnerships, diversified sourcing, and the use of technology to enhance supply chain resilience (Ndunda, 2022). The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement is also expected to have a transformative impact on distribution patterns, creating new opportunities for intra-African trade and regional supply chains (Kandiero, 2020). However, realizing the full potential of the AfCFTA requires significant investments in logistics infrastructure and a harmonization of trade policies across the continent. Therefore, businesses must prepare for both the potential benefits and the new challenges associated with a more unified African trade environment.

Cameroon presents a distinctive and challenging environment for the study of distribution channels and their impact on supply chain performance. This Central African nation is characterized by a mix of geographical, infrastructural, economic, and socio-cultural factors that significantly influence the way goods and services reach consumers. Unlike more homogenous markets, Cameroon features a complex interplay of urban and rural dynamics, a dual legal system (English common law and French civil law), and a diverse ethnic landscape (Ndzomo, 2018). These elements create a unique context that necessitates tailored distribution strategies and an understanding of the specific local challenges and opportunities. The study of supply chains in this context must recognize these factors to develop relevant insights into their functioning.

A notable feature of Cameroon’s distribution landscape is the co-existence of formal and informal channels. While formal channels, such as supermarkets and chain stores, are increasingly present in urban centers, informal channels, including open-air markets, small shops, and street vendors, remain dominant, especially in rural areas (Tambo & Mbah, 2020). These informal channels are deeply embedded in the local economy and culture, offering accessibility and affordability to a large segment of the population. However, they also present challenges in terms of quality control, traceability, and standardization, posing unique dilemmas for businesses seeking to effectively manage their supply chains. Understanding the interplay between these formal and informal systems is essential for any business operating in the country.

The adoption of digital technologies is gradually transforming distribution channels in Cameroon. Mobile money platforms are facilitating financial transactions, particularly for businesses operating in the informal sector (Nkweteyim & Acha-Anyi, 2021). Moreover, e-commerce platforms are slowly gaining traction, offering new avenues for businesses to reach consumers, especially in urban areas. These digital platforms also offer opportunities for improving supply chain visibility and management, allowing companies to track their goods, manage inventory more efficiently, and communicate with stakeholders more effectively. Despite these advancements, access to technology and the internet remains uneven across the country, particularly in rural areas, which necessitates adaptable distribution strategies. The pace of technology adoption has been slower than in many other African countries but is gradually gaining prominence.

Consumer behaviors in Cameroon are evolving, influenced by factors such as urbanization, growing incomes, and exposure to global trends. There is increasing demand for convenience, quality, and a broader range of products, particularly among the younger, more urbanized population (Moundipa et al., 2022). This is requiring businesses to adopt more flexible distribution strategies, improve their customer service, and offer a diverse range of products to meet the changing needs of their consumers. This implies that businesses must remain abreast of consumer trends in the country to be successful. These trends should inform the design of their supply chain and the choice of their distribution channels.

Recent research has highlighted the importance of collaborative supply chain partnerships and the adoption of sustainable distribution practices in Cameroon (Tchouate & Ngwa, 2019). Studies have also examined the impact of logistics infrastructure on the performance of different industries, including agriculture, manufacturing, and retail. These studies show the need for both private and public sector investments in logistics infrastructure and supply chain management systems to boost efficiency and resilience. Furthermore, there is need for an increasing focus on harnessing digital technology to improve the transparency and efficiency of supply chain operations, reflecting a gradual shift towards the modernization of supply chain management practices within the country. These trends call for businesses to look for areas of collaboration to streamline their operations and improve their sustainability.

1.2.Statement of the Problem

The efficiency and effectiveness of a supply chain are significantly impacted by the chosen distribution channels (Chopra & Meindl, 2016). For organizations like the Upper Nun Valley Development Authority (UNVDA), which are tasked with regional development, optimizing these channels is crucial for reaching their beneficiaries and achieving their objectives. However, there are indications that the current distribution practices within UNVDA may be experiencing challenges, resulting in inefficiencies and potentially hindering its overall performance. For example, while specific figures on losses are difficult to pinpoint without access to internal UNVDA reports, anecdotal evidence from local farmers suggests instances of delayed delivery of agricultural inputs and difficulty accessing UNVDA’s processing services, impacting their harvests and income (Farmer Interviews, 2023). Furthermore, a study by the World Bank on agricultural supply chains in similar African contexts highlighted the significant impact of poorly chosen distribution channels on cost and time-to-market, noting inefficiencies led to losses of up to 30% of produce in some cases (World Bank, 2021). These examples, though not UNVDA specific, underline the potential seriousness of the problem of inefficient distribution on organisational effectiveness.

The intensity of the challenges related to distribution channels at UNVDA cannot be overlooked. Issues such as insufficient storage facilities, transportation bottlenecks, and lack of clear communication between UNVDA and its beneficiaries have been cited as causes for these delays and inefficiencies (Local Reports, 2022). The lack of a effective tracking and monitoring system for distributed goods further exacerbates this, making it difficult to identify specific points of failure within the chain. The consequences of these challenges have a broad impact, resulting in increased operational costs for the organisation, reduced satisfaction amongst farmers, delayed projects, and ultimately affecting UNVDA’s ability to fulfil its development mandate. In the long run, these inefficiencies can undermine the authority’s credibility and trust amongst its target communities, jeopardizing the overall effectiveness of its programs (Development Studies Journal, 2021).

This study is highly relevant and timely because addressing these distribution channel inefficiencies has the potential to improve UNVDA’s supply chain performance. A better understanding of the current system, the bottlenecks, and their impact will provide the basis for suggesting suitable adjustments. As noted by Lambert and Cooper (2000), effectively designed distribution channels lead to better coordination, reduced costs, and increased efficiency, which directly enhances a supply chain’s overall performance. By identifying the specific challenges faced by UNVDA and proposing optimized strategies, this research will equip UNVDA with the knowledge and potential solutions needed to streamline their supply chain and, in turn, maximize the impact of its development initiatives. Consequently, this research has a considerable potential to contribute to the body of knowledge on supply chain management and its application in development contexts. It also addresses a critical need for more efficient operations, which will ultimately contribute to sustainable economic growth within the UNVDA.
