ABSTRACT
This study investigates the effects of financial statements on the growth of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Financial statements are crucial for businesses as they provide essential information on financial health, profitability, and cash flows, which are vital for making informed management decisions and securing funding. The research employs a quantitative approach, analyzing survey data from over 100 SME owners and managers in Buea to determine the extent to which the use of financial statements influences their business growth and decision-making processes.
The findings indicate that SMEs that regularly prepare and utilize financial statements tend to experience better growth metrics, including increased revenue and market expansion, compared to those that do not. Additionally, the study explores the challenges SMEs face in preparing these financial statements, such as lack of financial literacy and limited access to skilled accountants. The research also assesses the impact of external economic factors, such as regulatory requirements and market conditions, on the adoption and use of financial statements.
This investigation highlights the critical role of financial statements in enhancing business operations and supporting the growth of SMEs in Buea. By providing empirical evidence on the positive effects of financial transparency, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of financial management practices within SMEs, aiming to encourage better adoption and utilization of financial reporting.

Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are widely recognized as pivotal elements of economic development, particularly in emerging economies like Cameroon. In Buea Municipality, SMEs contribute significantly to employment creation, GDP, and fostering innovation. Despite their economic importance, SMEs face numerous challenges that impede their growth and sustainability, one of which is the effective management of financial resources (Ayyagari, Demirguc-Kunt, & Maksimovic, 2011).
The preparation and analysis of financial statements—comprising the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement—are fundamental practices in business management. These documents provide critical data that stakeholders use to assess a company’s financial health, make economic decisions, and attract investors. For SMEs, financial statements are not merely formal documents but are essential tools for decision-making, securing loans, attracting investors, and guiding business strategies (Penman, 2007).
However, in Buea, as in many parts of Africa, the application of sound financial practices among SMEs is often limited by several factors. These include the lack of financial literacy, limited access to skilled financial professionals, and the perception that financial management is overly complex or unnecessary for small-scale operations. This gap significantly affects the ability of SMEs to utilize financial statements to their full potential in guiding business growth (Brigham & Ehrhardt, 2013).
Furthermore, the regulatory environment in Cameroon presents additional challenges for SMEs. While there are regulations that mandate the preparation of financial statements for auditing and tax purposes, compliance is low due to lax enforcement and limited awareness among business owners about the benefits of compliance. This non-compliance not only hinders businesses from gaining access to credit but also limits their growth potential as they are unable to make informed strategic decisions (Watson & Wilson, 2002).
The theoretical framework underpinning this study draws on the Resource-Based View (RBV), which posits that firms can achieve a competitive advantage by effectively managing their internal resources. In the context of SMEs, financial statements are valuable resources that can provide insights into efficient resource allocation, cost management, and revenue optimization (Barney, 1991).
Empirical studies have shown a positive correlation between the use of financial statements and business performance. SMEs that diligently prepare and analyze their financial statements often enjoy higher profitability and better operational efficiency due to enhanced financial control and decision-making capabilities (Bernstein & Wild, 1999).
Despite the known benefits, many SMEs in Buea do not regularly prepare financial statements. The reasons for this include not only the factors mentioned earlier—such as lack of expertise and perceived irrelevance—but also the informal nature of many small businesses, which operate based on cash transactions and informal records that do not require formal financial reporting (Sian & Roberts, 2009).
Additionally, technological challenges such as lack of access to affordable accounting software and digital tools can impede the regular preparation and analysis of financial statements. While larger companies may have the resources to invest in advanced IT solutions for financial management, SMEs often struggle with basic bookkeeping (Collis & Jarvis, 2002).
This study aims to bridge the knowledge gap by examining the specific effects of financial statement usage on the growth of SMEs in Buea. It seeks to understand how enhancing financial practices among SMEs can lead to improved business outcomes and what interventions can be developed to promote the effective use of financial information in managing business operations.
Statement problem
Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in Buea Municipality play a significant role in the local economy, contributing to employment, innovation, and overall economic growth. However, the potential of these enterprises to expand and prosper is often hindered by inadequate financial management practices, particularly in the preparation and utilization of financial statements (Ayyagari, Demirguc-Kunt, & Maksimovic, 2011). Financial statements are crucial for businesses to monitor their financial health, inform strategic decisions, and facilitate access to capital. Despite their importance, many SMEs in Buea do not maintain regular financial records, significantly impacting their growth and sustainability.
The problem is exacerbated by a lack of financial literacy among SME owners, who often view the preparation of financial statements as a regulatory compliance requirement rather than a tool for business management (Penman, 2007). This perspective results in financial reports that are infrequently prepared and underutilized for business decision-making processes. Consequently, many SMEs fail to leverage these documents to analyze their financial standing comprehensively, leading to missed opportunities for informed decision-making and potential growth.
Moreover, the informal nature of many SMEs in Buea, coupled with a challenging regulatory environment, complicates the situation. The regulatory framework in Cameroon does mandate the preparation of financial statements for auditing and taxation purposes. However, enforcement is weak, and non-compliance is common, limiting these businesses’ ability to secure funding and establish credibility with financial institutions (Watson & Wilson, 2002).
Additionally, the technological infrastructure to support efficient financial management is often lacking. Many SMEs do not have access to affordable and user-friendly accounting software, which could streamline the process of financial record-keeping and analysis (Collis & Jarvis, 2002). This technological gap prevents SMEs from maintaining accurate and timely financial records, further deterring their capability to manage finances effectively.
This research seeks to address these issues by exploring the extent to which the use of financial statements affects the growth and financial performance of SMEs in Buea Municipality. By examining how these businesses manage their financial reporting and the challenges they face in doing so, the study aims to offer insights into improving financial practices among SMEs. The ultimate goal is to provide evidence-based recommendations that can help these businesses harness the full potential of financial statements to drive growth and improve their operational sustainability.
