CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The rise of mobile marketing has significantly reshaped global business strategies, especially in the context of customer retention and loyalty. Across the world, businesses increasingly rely on mobile marketing strategies to connect with consumers in ways that were not previously possible. These strategies leverage the widespread use of smartphones and mobile internet access to engage with customers through tailored content, mobile apps, social media, and SMS campaigns. As smartphones have become ubiquitous, mobile marketing has evolved from a niche tool to a core component of a company’s marketing mix. According to Chaffey (2019), global mobile marketing spending is projected to grow substantially, reaching billions of dollars in the coming years. The primary goal of these strategies is not just to reach consumers but to build long-lasting relationships, with an emphasis on personalized content that fosters loyalty. Research indicates that when companies use mobile marketing effectively, they can increase customer loyalty by providing more personalized and immediate customer experiences (Andrews et al., 2020). The ability to send real-time promotions, exclusive offers, and tailored content has shown a direct impact on improving customer engagement and reducing churn rates. However, the impact of mobile marketing is not uniform globally. Regions with advanced technological infrastructure, such as North America and Europe, have seen faster adoption and more effective implementation compared to developing regions where challenges such as limited internet access and digital literacy persist (Smith, 2021). The global context thus sets the stage for understanding the broader trends and challenges that shape mobile marketing strategies in specific countries and regions.

Mobile marketing in Africa has gained considerable traction, particularly in countries like Nigeria, which boasts one of the largest mobile markets on the continent. The rise of mobile internet usage in Africa has given companies an unprecedented opportunity to engage with customers on a personalized level, fostering deeper connections and enhancing loyalty. According to the International Telecommunication Union (2021), Africa saw a 10% increase in mobile broadband subscriptions in 2020, reflecting a rapid adoption of mobile internet access. Nigeria, with a population of over 200 million, represents one of the largest mobile markets in Africa, and mobile marketing strategies have become crucial for telecommunication companies operating in the region. MTN Nigeria, for example, has been at the forefront of mobile marketing, using a combination of SMS, app-based services, and mobile advertisements to build customer loyalty (Adebayo & Oladele, 2021). These companies are increasingly adopting mobile marketing to create more personalized services that address the needs and preferences of Nigerian consumers. Interactive campaigns, mobile loyalty programs, and real-time promotions have been shown to improve customer retention, as these strategies provide consumers with tangible benefits and immediate rewards (Eze & Chinedu, 2020). However, mobile marketing in Nigeria faces challenges such as high data costs, inconsistent network quality, and limited digital literacy, which can impact the effectiveness of these strategies (Ogundeji & Oyekunle, 2021). Moreover, concerns over data privacy and security have raised questions about the ethical implications of mobile marketing, leading some consumers to question their trust in mobile marketing communications (Dube & Giel, 2021). Despite these challenges, mobile marketing remains a powerful tool for enhancing customer loyalty, and Nigerian telecommunication companies continue to innovate to overcome these barriers and improve service delivery.

In Cameroon, mobile marketing is rapidly becoming a central component of telecommunication firms’ marketing strategies. With a population of over 27 million people, the country presents significant opportunities for mobile marketing, as mobile phone penetration continues to rise. According to research by Tchoukeu & Kouadio (2020), Cameroon’s telecommunications market has been growing steadily, with a marked increase in the use of mobile phones and internet services. MTN Cameroon, as one of the dominant players in the market, has adopted a variety of mobile marketing strategies to build customer loyalty and enhance brand engagement. These strategies include SMS marketing, mobile applications for customer service, and interactive campaigns targeting the diverse demographics in Cameroon. A study by Nguefack & Ebongue (2020) highlighted how MTN’s mobile marketing efforts, including personalized promotions and mobile rewards programs, have helped it retain a loyal customer base in a competitive market. The use of SMS and mobile applications has been particularly effective in reaching customers in urban and rural areas alike, bridging the digital divide. However, the effectiveness of these strategies is impacted by infrastructure challenges such as inconsistent mobile network coverage, high data costs, and low levels of digital literacy among certain segments of the population (Ndam & Dongmo, 2022). Despite these hurdles, mobile marketing has become an essential tool for companies looking to maintain customer loyalty, and its growth is expected to continue as the country’s digital infrastructure improves. Furthermore, the cultural diversity within Cameroon means that personalized and localized marketing campaigns are crucial for ensuring maximum engagement and loyalty from customers.

Focusing on the case of MTN Bamenda provides valuable insights into the specific challenges and opportunities of mobile marketing strategies in a localized setting. Located in the North West Region of Cameroon, Bamenda is a city characterized by its unique cultural and geographical features. MTN Bamenda has been leveraging mobile marketing strategies to strengthen customer loyalty, using tools such as SMS-based promotions, mobile apps, and targeted advertising to engage with local consumers (Tchoukeu & Mbembet, 2021). These strategies have allowed MTN to cater to the local population’s preferences, offering promotions tailored to specific customer needs and behaviors. Research by Awa & Tchoukeu (2020) indicated that MTN’s use personalised content, such as localised promotions and loyalty programs, has successfully cultivated a sense of community and trust among its customers. Moreover, MTN has utilised customer feedback mechanisms via mobile platforms to better understand the needs of its clientele and adjust its marketing strategies accordingly (Nkemngong & Buma, 2021). This level of personalisation is crucial in a market like Bamenda, where consumer preferences can be quite diverse due to the city’s cultural and ethnic diversity. However, despite the successes, MTN Bamenda faces challenges typical of Cameroon’s telecommunication landscape, such as inconsistent network coverage, limited internet access, and high data costs, which can limit the reach and effectiveness of mobile marketing campaigns (Musa & Nguefack, 2021). Understanding the impact of these strategies on customer loyalty within the Bamenda context provides important lessons for other telecommunication firms in Cameroon and the broader African market.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The telecommunications industry in Cameroon, particularly in urban areas like Bamenda, is experiencing intense competition among service providers. As customer retention becomes more challenging, telecommunication companies like MTN Bamenda are increasingly relying on mobile marketing strategies to foster customer loyalty. While mobile marketing offers an innovative way to engage with customers, there is a gap in understanding the direct impact of these strategies on customer loyalty, especially within the context of MTN Bamenda. The effectiveness of mobile marketing strategies such as SMS campaigns, mobile app promotions, and push notifications in building lasting relationships with customers remains unclear. Despite the growing use of these marketing tactics, there is limited research that explores how they influence customer satisfaction and loyalty in Cameroon’s telecommunication sector. This lack of understanding presents a significant challenge for marketing teams, as they may be investing heavily in strategies that do not resonate with or influence their target audience effectively.

Furthermore, there is a need to evaluate whether these mobile marketing efforts are adequately aligned with the needs and preferences of customers, particularly in a diverse and evolving market like Bamenda. Customer loyalty in the telecommunications industry is often built on service reliability, pricing, and customer support, but mobile marketing offers a more direct and personal form of engagement that could enhance customer experiences. However, it is uncertain whether MTN Bamenda’s mobile marketing strategies are sufficiently personalized or impactful enough to influence customers’ long-term commitment to the brand. If these strategies are not effectively tailored or delivered through the right channels, MTN Bamenda risks failing to retain a significant portion of its customer base. Without a clear understanding of how mobile marketing strategies drive customer loyalty, MTN Bamenda could face challenges in maintaining its market position and achieving sustainable growth in the competitive telecommunication landscape.

This study, therefore, seeks to bridge this gap by examining the effects of mobile marketing strategies on customer loyalty at MTN Bamenda. It will focus on assessing specific strategies, such as SMS marketing, the MTN mobile app, and push notifications, to understand their role in enhancing customer engagement and retention. By exploring the effectiveness of these strategies in fostering customer loyalty, the study aims to provide insights that can guide MTN Bamenda in refining its marketing approach and maximising its customer retention efforts. In a rapidly evolving telecommunications environment where customer loyalty is increasingly hard to maintain, understanding how mobile marketing can be used strategically to build lasting relationships with customers is critical to ensuring both short-term success and long-term sustainability for MTN Bamenda.
