ABSTRACT

This study investigates the effects of school violence on academic achievement in secondary schools in Buea, Cameroon. School violence can disrupt the learning environment, negatively impact students’ academic performance, and affect overall school effectiveness. This research aims to assess how different forms of school violence influence students’ academic outcomes and identify contributing factors.

A mixed-method approach was utilized, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Surveys were administered to students, teachers, and school administrators to gather data on the prevalence and types of violence (physical, verbal, and psychological) in schools, and their impact on academic performance. Academic records were analyzed to determine the correlation between instances of violence and students’ grades. Qualitative interviews with educators and students provided deeper insights into their experiences with violence, its effects on learning, and coping strategies. The study also reviewed relevant literature on school violence and its academic impact to provide context for the findings.

The findings reveal that school violence significantly affects academic achievement in Buea’s secondary schools. Schools experiencing high levels of violence reported lower academic performance among students. Physical violence, bullying, and psychological abuse were found to create an environment that hinders learning and negatively impacts student motivation and concentration. Challenges identified include inadequate support systems for affected students, lack of effective disciplinary measures, and insufficient resources for violence prevention programs. Students and teachers highlighted the need for improved school safety and supportive interventions to mitigate the effects of violence.

The study concludes that addressing school violence is essential for enhancing academic achievement. Recommendations include implementing comprehensive violence prevention programs, improving support services for affected students, and fostering a safe and supportive school climate. By addressing these issues, secondary schools in Buea can improve students’ academic performance and overall well-being.
