ABSTRACT
This study examined the effects of social support on the mental health of pregnant teenagers in Limbe District, Cameroon. Using a cross-sectional design, data was collected from 50 pregnant adolescents to assess their awareness, perceived importance, and accessibility of social support systems, as well as the mental health challenges they face.
Key findings revealed that while 90% of participants recognized social support as critically important for mental well-being, only 32% had substantial knowledge about available support mechanisms. Family support emerged as the most influential factor in reducing anxiety and depression, though 46% reported distance from family as a major barrier. Community outreach programs (40%) and counseling services (30%) were highly desired interventions, whereas peer support had minimal uptake (0%), suggesting context-specific limitations. Financial constraints (10%) and fear of judgment (6%) further exacerbated mental health struggles, though cultural stigma was unexpectedly unreported.
The study highlights a critical gap between the recognized importance of social support and its practical accessibility for pregnant teens in Limbe. Recommendations include strengthening family education programs, expanding community-based mental health services, and integrating psychosocial support into prenatal care. These findings contribute to global discourse on adolescent maternal health by emphasizing the need for tailored, multi-level support systems in low-resource settings.

Also, Social support can come from different Sources with the role of the family being especially significant in many cultures. In western countries, supportive partners and. healthcare providers are often highlighted as key factors in Promoting mental health during teenage pregnancy [4]. However, in low- and middle-Income countries, the lack of mental health services and social resources present greater challenges for pregnant teenagers, exacerbating the emotional burden of pregnancy.
Furthermore, in Africa the issue of teenage pregnancy is particularly concerning with some of the highest rate of adolescent pregnancy globally. Factors such as early marriage, socioeconomic, pressure and cultural norms, leaving young mothers with limited emotional and social support. The stigma surrounding teenage pregnancy in many Africa communities can increase feeling of isolation and shame, making it difficult for young mothers to seek help [4]. Social support in Africa is typically provided by family, but the quality and accessibility of this support can vary greatly, base on educational level and community norms. In rural areas where access to health care and mental services is limited, young mothers may face more challenges in receiving the support they need [5]. In contrast, urban areas may have better access to resources, but teenage mothers still often face social exclusive, which negatively impact their mental health. Peer support, such as through support groups has also been shown to play an important role in improving the mental health of pregnant teenagers [6].
In Cameroon, teenage pregnancies are common, and young mothers often face various socio-economic difficulties, including, poverty, stigma, and lack of adequate mental health resources. Social support is a critical factor that can mitigate some of these challenges, as it provides emotional, financial and informational resources that help individuals cope with stress and adversity [4]. However, little is known about the effect
