Global maritime operations contribute approximately 2.5-3% of total greenhouse gas emissions, with projections suggesting a potential increase to 10-15% by 2050 if current practices continue unchanged (Cristea et al., 2022; IMO Climate Change Report, 2023). The International Maritime Organization (IMO, 2023) has highlighted multiple pollution mechanisms, including atmospheric emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, alongside marine ecosystem contamination through oil spillage, ballast water introduction of invasive species, and microplastic dispersal (Peng et al., 2022; UNEP Marine Pollution Assessment, 2022).

Within the African continental context, maritime transport assumes even more complex dimensions. According to the African Development Bank (2022), approximately 38 of the 54 African countries possess coastal territories, with nearly 90% of their import-export trade conducted through maritime channels (World Bank Maritime Report, 2021). However, these regions frequently demonstrate limited environmental regulatory frameworks, insufficient technological infrastructure, and economic pressures that often prioritize trade over ecological preservation (Okafor-Yarwood et al., 2020; African Union Maritime Strategy Report, 2022).

The expansion of port infrastructure and frequent shipping operations have led to significant ecological disturbances, such as the destruction of mangrove forests, sedimentation, and the displacement of marine species. Furthermore, weak regulatory enforcement and limited environmental monitoring systems hinder effective pollution control and sustainable port management. Despite these issues, current research efforts remain fragmented and lack comprehensive data on the long-term environmental impacts. There is a pressing need to investigate these challenges through a holistic and context-specific approach that can inform better environmental governance and sustainable development strategies for the Douala maritime region.
