INTRODUCTION
Cassiterite (SnO₂), the primary ore of tin, has played a pivotal role in global mining and industrial development. In recent years, global demand for tin has risen sharply due to its essential use in electronics, renewable energy systems, and advanced technologies (Lehmann, 2021). Currently, most of the world’s tin is produced in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Myanmar, followed by China, Bolivia, Peru, and Cornwall in the United Kingdom. Together, these regions account for approximately 85% of historical global tin production (Lehmann, 2021). Nearly half of this production still comes from alluvial deposits, where artisanal and small-scale mining is widespread, underscoring the deep socio-economic link between tin mining and many developing countries (Elsner, 2014).
In Africa, cassiterite mining has been central to the mining economy across the continent’s mineral-rich belts. Notably, the Kibara and Karagwe-Ankole belts in Central Africa host significant cassiterite mineralization, both in primary quartz veins and pegmatites, as well as in secondary alluvial deposits (Dewaele et al., 2011). Countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Cameroon have become important tin producers. However, the environmental costs of cassiterite mining in Africa are substantial. Mining activities have led to widespread land degradation, deforestation (Kouankap Nono et al., 2017). In many cases, poor regulatory oversight and the absence of mine closure plans have left behind hazardous abandoned mine sites, posing ongoing risks to local communities and ecosystems (Dickson et al., 2017).
In Cameroon, the Adamawa Region—particularly the Mayo Darle area—has a long history of cassiterite mining. Mining in Mayo Darle has involved both industrial operations and artisanal mining, providing livelihoods to local populations but also leaving behind severe environmental damage (Essapo & Ekedi, 2020). The abandonment of mines in Mayo Darle has resulted in open pits, unstable waste dumps, and polluted water bodies. These abandoned sites contribute to land degradation, loss of agricultural land, deforestation, siltation of rivers, and contamination of soil and water with heavy metals, affecting both human health and the local ecosystem (Ndace & Danladi, 2017). Moreover, the lack of post-mining rehabilitation and effective regulatory enforcement has allowed illegal artisanal mining to flourish, further worsening environmental damage (Kouankap Nono et al., 2017).
Soil erosion, loss of soil fertility, contamination of water resources, and the destruction of vegetation and wildlife habitats have long-term impacts on local communities, including reduced agricultural productivity, food insecurity, health problems, and poverty (Ndace & Danladi, 2017; Essapo & Ekedi, 2020.) Globally, mine closure and rehabilitation are now recognized as critical to achieving sustainable mining practices. Successful mine closure requires careful planning to decommission mining infrastructure, stabilize waste material, restore soil and vegetation, and monitor environmental recovery (Essapo & Ekedi, 2020). In Cameroon, however, progress toward responsible mine closure has been slow, and the absence of formal rehabilitation in areas like Mayo Darle underscores the urgent need for stronger policies, community engagement, and investment in environmental restoration.
This study aims to assess the environmental conditions of the abandoned cassiterite mines in Mayo Darle, analyze the impacts of past mining activities, and propose practical strategies for mine closure and rehabilitation. By focusing on this specific case, the project seeks to contribute to improved environmental governance, reduce environmental risks, and promote sustainable land management that benefits both ecosystems and local communities.
1.2 Problem Statement
The Mayo Darle area in Cameroon’s Adamawa Region has experienced decades of cassiterite (tin ore) mining, resulting in numerous abandoned mine sites that now pose serious and growing environmental, social, and economic challenges. These degraded sites are marked by open pits, extensive soil erosion, deforested landscapes, and contaminated water sources. Such conditions have led to severe land degradation, biodiversity loss, pollution of surface and groundwater, and a sharp decline in agricultural productivity—undermining local livelihoods that depend on farming and natural resources. Efforts to rehabilitate these sites have been largely ineffective due to weak enforcement of mining and environmental regulations, limited technical expertise, lack of community involvement, and chronic underfunding. The absence of sustainable post-mining land use plans further complicates recovery. If left unaddressed, these abandoned mines will continue to endanger environmental health, worsen poverty, and impede the region’s long-term development goals. This study seeks to assess the current environmental status of the abandoned sites, understand the institutional and technical barriers to effective rehabilitation, and recommend actionable, locally appropriate strategies for ecological restoration and socio-economic recovery. The goal is to support evidence-based policymaking and promote sustainable development in the Mayo Darle region.
1.3 Main and Specific Research Questions

“What was the extent of environmental degradation caused by abandoned cassiterite mines in Mayo Darle, Adamawa Region, and how were these sites effectively rehabilitated and transformed into usable spaces that met community needs?”
